Corporate escapee – After 23 years working for brilliant brands including Costa Coffee, Whitbread, RAC, Virgin Atlantic and Vodafone I now enjoy my portfolio career. I still love working with corporate clients, and enjoy the challenge of how organisations evolve and transform.

Founder – Another Door supports people in the space in-between a door closing and the next door opening, so that you know how to own what happens next.  We also support businesses to handle redundancy well with mindset centred outplacement programmes.

Author –Why losing your job… started as scribbles in a notebook, then a blog, then a podcast then a book. I got a book deal with Penguin in 2019, so now I spread the message to everyone who needs it! Next book coming out in September 2025 - Another Door opens.

So let's say cheers to all those "thank you but we've gone we've someone else" "we've had a huge response to our job advert with a very high quality and you aren't one of them" "thank you for your interest but we've gone with another provider" "we decided to book another speaker who was more appropriate"  "we don't realise how crap it is to send out these emails at 4pm on Friday - until one day when we get fired, and we try to start something new, and then we complain about it on LinkedIn".

I don't know why they do it.

But they do.

It's ok - enjoy your weekend.

Ok, so Victoria Beckham...

It’s the classic career change story really. 

I was surprised how much I resonated with her story. Not just personally, but my clients who are changing career, starting something new, doing something big.

🍃 When a door closes we have to pause

When the Spice Girls ended Victoria went solo, she kept busy, and defaulted to what she thought she needed to do. As David shared 'she needed a rest (a PAUSE) but she dived straight in'.

🍃 When you decide to follow a dream, know that  it's probably for the long game

Sometimes it feels twee to 'follow your dreams' and in some spaces it feels like this sentiment gets hijacked and trivialised. But watching Victoria felt like someone who always wanted to be, to do something and decided to give it everything she's got. To follow a deep dream carries an acknowledgement of exactly what that is going to take. 

🍃 There will be a lot of mistakes and setbacks, and you need to watch your health

In the end it took 18 years to get to the Paris Fashion Week show! That blew my mind. That she kept going, trying, learning, finding a way through. Making a lot of mistakes. 

We can dismiss and say 'its easy to take 'risks if you don't have much to lose' but I felt like she had a lot to lose. Not least her sanity! Because when you have a dream it needs to come with a big health warning.

🍃 Investing in your expertise still matters

She had to prove herself, to investors, to critics, to an industry that doesn’t hand out second chances to chancers. Even the investor wasn’t convinced until the product won them over (when their wife endorsed the dress). 

🍃 Not everyone will cheer your new direction. 

Some people will not be able to be with you on the journey.  Sometimes for their own sake, their fear, sometimes its highly inconvenient you've decided to change.  

The Spice Girls were four years of her life but that’s the version some people want to hold onto. 

🍃 You will have to let go to create space for new

The moment for Victoria ' the WAG had to die'. Letting go with intention sends a message: first and foremost, to yourself.

🍃 Finding a mentor, coach, cheerleader is a gamechanger

The right mentor can make all the difference. Roland Mouret didn’t mess around. He showed her how to be a great designer, he was a teacher and guide, but she had to do the work.

🍃 Your reason for doing something is for you to own (it doesn't always have to be a greater purpose)

David asks why she keeps going. She says, “For you.” He says, “Maybe for yourself too.” Sometimes that’s it, we keep going because we want to prove it to ourselves.

Maybe our work wont end up in Paris, but it's reassuring to know that the journey of career change and reinvention is a shared universal experience that we all need to understand better to encourage each other, and keep us evolving for the better. 

I'm left inspired and energised - not something I thought I was going to get from a Netflix indulgent evening!

Did you make losing your job the best thing that happened to you?

When I wrote this book it was with the idea a caring manager who genuinely was devasted to tell someone they have lost their job, could offer something as a small ray of hope.

The final book title slightly changed that ‘touchpoint’ 👀🫣 as they say in the corporate world. 

Because when you lose your job you arent in the mood to be told its a great move.

But after the news, when youve taken sometime to think, it could be a game changing moment for you.

We have choices. In the book I call it

👉👉 Stick - stick to what you are doing (but try to upgrade)

👉👉Twist - twist what you do, do it in a different way

👉👉Bust - time to do something completely different.

So. If youve just lost your job, its ok to wallow, and then its ok to think you can make it a good thing to happen to you.

Are you reading my book, Another Door Opens; all about how to navigate change to find joy, calm and opportunity?

Do you want to join the 'Messy' readalong tonight? 

I've written a blog to sum up the messy part of change (in comments). 

Maybe change doesn't always have to be messy, but knowing that it can get messy can be a huge comfort, that reassures you it's part of the process, it's not that you are getting it wrong. 

The blog focuses around 'riding the waves of change'. When I was developing ideas for the book I watched and read a lot of stories about people from all kinds of backgrounds navigating a change. Jack Johnston's documentary caught my imagination and I disappeared into the world of surfing for a while. 

‘You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.’ – Jon Kabat-Zinn

In the book, I include Jack’s story, from surfer to musician. 

“As Jack says, ‘The waves can teach you a lot about life.’ Jack had to rethink his whole career and life after a serious accident at Pipeline, one of the world’s most dangerous surf spots, abruptly ended his professional surfing ambitions. ‘The accident was a wake-up call,’ Jack says. ‘I thought, what else am I going to do? So I followed things that I loved, music and film, as that helped me through recovery. My mum bought me a guitar and that started me on my next path.”

So, when the waves of change hit, don’t brace too tightly. Let yourself ride them. Feel the pull, the swell, the dip. Trust that every wave, every emotion, every question, every wobble is carrying you somewhere new.

It might be where resistance shows up. Why it feels messy. But this part of the book is about change being an invitation to stay curious, to stay open, and to keep showing up, messy, human, and real, not hiding or pretending.
