100 years in a few seconds. This is how glaciers changed. 🧊

Juergen Merz and Michel Galati turned photographs of Swiss and Austrian glaciers into short AI-animated movies. 

From past to present - we can see the impact of climate change. And it’s striking!

We don’t see this change day to day, but on such time scale it’s tremendous. And it’s getting faster. Just in the last 2 years Switzerland lost 10% of its ice. 

Imagine, how our planet will look like in the next 10 or 20 years?

We can’t bring these glaciers back. But how can we make sure we still let nature thrive?

Microplastics in soils is the next big thing!

Eye-opening study from Seoul National University (a bit horrifying too 🙈).

While we don’t know the full picture of soil plastic pollution - and what it leads to, this study gives us a huge insight.

It follows behaviour of tiny soil worms (nematodes) - critical soil workers recycling nutrients and supporting plant growth. 🪱

Apparently, plastic in soils releases signals that make nematodes crave plastic more than actual food. They get attracted to it! 😮

While that might sound fantastic at first glance - it isn’t. The results show that microplastics exposure drops nematodes reproduction rates by 40%! Because of toxic additives. That’s A LOT!

What does it mean for us? 

- It means biodiversity & soil health are under threat. And without healthy soils - there are no healthy us.

- It also means there is so much we still don’t know about microplastics exposure! And we need to take action now to minimise all these unknown risks.

1. COP30: Denmark announces the most ambitious climate plan yet! To cut emissions by 82% by 2035. Go Denmark! 💪

2. China’s emissions reach their peak and are starting to fall faster than expected! Why? Renewables, rapid adoption of EVs, and lower emissions in the construction industry. 

3. The EU: landmark decision to include climate education into a school curriculum: from kindergarden to 12th grade. 👫 Yes to that!

3 warnings: 
1. World’s second largest rainforest in Congo is approaching a tipping point. 🌳 With 10,000 plant species it removes 600 million tonnes of carbon/year. But that number is falling. We have a decade to save it. 

2. CDP analysis: businesses expect 420 billion USD of extreme weather risks in the coming years. BUT! These risks can be mitigated with just 80 million USD investment. 

3. The EU lawmakers broke our heart & 
weakened sustainability due diligence directive. 90% of companies obligated to report are now out & don’t need to fix human rights and environmental issues in their supply chains. Whaaat? 🤦‍♀️

Which news caught you most?

This was unexpected! But it hit home. 

Nature thrives when we don’t control it. When we don’t put it into our boundaries of order. When we don’t trim it. When we give it space.

What if the same is true of us. What if we don’t need to “trim” ourselves into being perfect. And just be real us instead?

This video made me feel all kinds of things I can’t put into words yet. What about you?

The good news we all need today!

Antarctica gained ice! 🧊 

Using data from NASA satellites, scientists have been tracking Antarctica’s ice sheet over 2 decades.

It’s all been downhill. But from 2021 to 2024 they saw the trend reverse and some of the ice recover.

Why?

With warming climate there is more moisture in the atmosphere. -> This causes more extreme weather events. -> Like heavy snowfall and rain that fell over Antarctica these years & led to increased ice mass.

Will it stay?

Likely not. Scientists say precipitation trends are back to 2020, before the increase. This isn’t reversed global warming. Gained ice can’t even begin to cover all the losses over decades. But it buys us a bit of extra time!

Why is Antarctica important?

It’s the largest mass of ice on Earth & holds 90% of world’s fresh water. When Antarctica melts, sea levels rise.

Further proof of how interconnected Earth systems are! And that nature is giving us extra breathing space at every turn. Let’s take it seriously and act wisely.

This is not ok! This is poison!

Draft Omnimus regulation attempts to deregulate all pesticides in the EU. Yes, we can simplify the rules to avoid 'red tape'. But approving dangerous chemicals indefinitely - is not one of the things we should compromise!

Did you know: it takes just 6 months to put a chemical on the market - and up to 20 years to take it out even when it’s dangerous? (Visit ChemSec for more info).

Chemicals (or novel entities) are also 1 of 9 planetary boundaries. And it’s already through the roof!

What's in the proposal:
- Unlimited approval of all pesticides. Now approvals need to be reviewed every 10-15 years.
- Removal of Member State's obligation to consider latest science on the matter (What?)
- Doubling grace periods: even when chemicals are banned, they could still be sold of 3 years.

This needs to stop. We can’t keep poisoning ourselves. This is our health!

1. Norway officially halted all deep sea mining plans until 2029! More time to assess risks & a major ocean win for now. 🌊

2. In a historic & shocking shift, the UK announced a complete stop to new oil and gas licences in the North Sea!

3. Colombia becomes the first nation in the Amazon to ban all mining and oil projects! Entire territory will be made into a reserve for renewable resources. One of the boldest rainforest protection moves so far! 🌳
 3 warnings: 
1. New study confirmed: >60K African penguins starved to death following a dramatic crash in sardine populations. Climate crisis and overfishing are to blame. 🐧

2. Climate crisis also supercharged deadly monsoons in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Towns are underwater, lots of people are killed. Scientists are clear: this is not normal. 

3. The EU wants to allow indefinite pesticide approval, removing scientific reviews & re-approval every 10-15 years that keep harmful chemicals in check! 🤢 This is a huge concern for soils and our health.

3 wins:
1. COP30 approved the Belém Package - a global plan to 3x climate adaptation finance, especially for vulnerable countries.

2. Investors stand for climate! 💰 New global survey shows that >80% of them still support the net zero transition & will increase climate-aligned investments in the coming years (because climate investments perform strongly too!) 

3. Deutsche Bank announced a new 900 billion EUR target for 2030 for sustainable transition finance! And will facilitate 300 transactions to support biodiversity and regeneration. 🌳
 3 warnings:
1. COP30 ended without any mention of fossil fuels. Who are we kidding? We can’t address the climate crisis without phasing them out. 🤦‍♀️

2. World heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef in Australia is “deathly silent”: 2 out of 3 corals died after an unprecedented marine heatwave. 💔

3. New global analysis: the US anti-climate agenda could cause 1.3 million more deaths this century, especially in Africa and south Asia.

1. Big news from COP! Brazil officially launches “Tropical Forests Forever Facility” to raise $125 billion to protect rainforests. Over 50 countries agreed to support. Let’s keep forests standing. 🌳

2. Also at COP: Spain and Germany pledged €100 million funding for vulnerable countries through World Bank. 

3. Finland uses nature to improve kids’ health. 43 daycare centres rewilded their yards. In 1 month -> kids showed stronger immune responses and healthier skin microbiomes. 👶

3 warnings: 

1. The EU weakens its climate targets just before COP30. Climate ministers agreed on a watered-down target: 90% emissions reduction by 2040 BUT with a possibility to weaken this goal. 

2. New investigation: fossil fuel projects are threatening health of 2 billion people worldwide. Cost of inaction isn’t just environmental, it’s deeply human. 

3. Climate disasters are getting super expensive! First half of 2025 was the costliest on record for the U.S.: damages from 14 extreme events have soared to over $100 billion.💰

Which news caught you most?

So much of what we think is nature - is actually not.

We walk by manucured grass fields with trees, evenly spaced apart 🌳  🌳  🌳. And admire the view. But this is not nature. This is a big, carefully planned & maintained garden. (See how there are no fallen leaves there? It’s autumn! 🍁)

Nature is messy. With a fallen tree because of the storm. With plants growing on top of each other, reaching for light. With a bunch of leaves on the ground, full of nutrients. And mushrooms, popping up here and there to recycle these nutrients back.

And nature is perfect in this “mess”. Because behind it all is a 100% circular system, full of life, biodiversity and no waste. 

Sometimes we thrive on order. But that order makes things overly simple. It lacks vibrancy and complex interconnections. It lacks life.

What if we let nature “be” instead of “ordering” it around? 

Because nature knows better. And it’s beautifully wonderous just the way it is. 💚

So why do we have only 3 types in the shop? While we could be eating all of these!

Our food plates became increasingly simple. Yes, that means industrial scale production. But it also means loss of nutrition: both in soils and in our bodies.

The more diverse our ecosystems are - the stronger they are. It’s the same for our bodies. The more varied foods we eat - the healthier we are too.

What if we could bring the variety back! Wouldn’t life and food have much more colours in it?

Fossil fuels "must not be named"!

This is COP30 in a nutshell 🙈 (with a reference to Voldemort from Harry Potter, if you know what I mean). 

2 years ago countries discussed a phase-out roadmap for coal, oil & gas at COP28. Now it’s nowhere to be seen or even mentioned.

How is that even possible? 

Yes, there were good wins: billions pledged for tropical rainforests & tripling climate adaption finance.

But is it really enough to make real progress?

It’s like we keep brushing our teeth, hoping the cavity will go away by itself. 

Spoiler alert: it won’t. 
And the longer we wait - the more expensive it will cost to fix it. And no, if all fails, we can’t make a new planet like we can make a fake tooth.
