Working full-time while attending college, I pursued a career in banking and finance. I quickly realized it wasn't the right path for me.

Determined to find my true passion, I went back to school and studied healthcare. I landed executive positions at several large healthcare and consulting firms, honing my leadership skills.

In search of fulfillment, I embarked on a journey to earn my PhD in Information Science in 2017 and began exploring the world of AI in 2020.

3 simple words that can quietly change how you make decisions and ultimately your outcomes.

Many think luck is only random. 
It's just something that happens to us.

Research suggests that simply feeling lucky can actually influence our thoughts and actions. 

When people see themselves as lucky, 
they become more patient.

Patience = the ability to choose the bigger, long-term reward over the smaller, immediate one. It’s called "luck perception," and it has fascinating implications for leadership, teams, and strategy.

Feeling lucky boosts decision confidence.
If you believe the odds are in your favor, 
your brain relaxes.

You plan for the future instead of grabbing the quick win.

The same study found that this approach works best for people who see themselves as part of a team (an interdependent mindset) rather than as a solo operator.

That means leaders can foster better long-term thinking simply by framing goals through a collective sense of purpose.

🧠 Why this matters in the real world

We spend so much time fighting uncertainty.
- Economic pressure. 
- AI disruption. 
- Layoffs.

It’s easy to default to short-term moves: cut costs, chase clicks, accept the smaller-sooner reward.

But if a tiny mental nudge (“We’re lucky to be here”) makes people more willing to delay gratification, that’s a powerful leadership tool.

An unexpected moment can reset a room. 

"The Batman Effect" can multiply kindness.

Researchers recently tested what happens when surprise collides with habit.
In Milan’s metro, a man dressed as Batman walked onto a train. When he did, 67% of people offered their seat to a stranger. Without him, only 38% did.

Almost half of those helpers never even noticed Batman, meaning that after the ride, they surveyed participants. Surprisingly, about 44% of those who offered their seat said they hadn’t noticed Batman at all. Even though almost half of the helpers didn’t consciously see Batman, they still exhibited different behavior.

The effect wasn’t limited to those who noticed the cue, 
it spread indirectly.

The psychologists called it “The Batman Effect.”

An unexpected cue snapped people out of autopilot just long enough to notice someone else.
- When we notice, we care.
- When we care, we help.

What’s fascinating is that awareness didn’t stay isolated.
It spread, almost like an emotional contagion.

One act of noticing seemed to wake others up too.
We can create environments that make empathy easier.

That’s the part we often miss: kindness isn’t just a feeling, it’s a design principle.

When life runs on rhythm, we are on autopilot.
- We scroll 
- We schedule 
- We multitask

Even small disruptions can bring people back.
- A pause that wasn’t planned.
- A thank-you that wasn’t expected.
- A compliment that catches someone off guard.

Tiny surprises can reset the social system.
They remind people they’re seen, and that reminder spreads.

Try this:
- Leave a note where it doesn’t belong.
- Acknowledge the person everyone overlooks.

Break one predictable pattern, with warmth, not pressure.
It only takes a moment to start a ripple.

Many think motivation appears first and action follows.

It almost never works that way.

Motivation grows from movement.

Confidence grows from doing what you said you would do even on the days you don’t want to do it.

This is what I’ve learned…
Your life is built by the choices you make when your mood is not cooperating.

The mornings you show up anyway.
The days you choose intentionally.
The nights you decide that discipline matters more than how you feel in the moment.

People lose momentum when they assume they need more inspiration.

In these times, it’s likely that they need more follow through.

Small consistent actions change how you see yourself and how you move through the world.

If you want the next version of you,
start with the choices you make today
not the mood you hope to have tomorrow.

Friction beats willpower.

Every. Single. Time.

We keep trying to “focus harder,” hoping that will help us accomplish more. But the science says try this instead:

Make the “wrong thing” harder to do.

A recent study did something very simple: It had participants block mobile internet for two weeks.

Calls and texts still worked.
Everything else required a laptop.

Here’s what happened:

- Anxiety dropped
- Attention improved
- Well-being increased

And nothing dramatic changed.
No new habit stacks.
No 5 AM routines.

Just a little bit of friction in an environment that was too easy to get lost in.

This is the part most people overlook:
Your environment will always outperform your willpower.

So here’s the practical version; it’s what I’ve done in my life, and it’s made a big difference.

Consider giving this a try:

- Delete the app, keep the account
- Keep the phone, block the browser
- Put the distraction behind some friction

Make the easy thing harder, and the right thing becomes effortless.

Focus isn’t a personality trait.
It’s a design choice.

And a small dose of friction might be the most underrated productivity tool we have.

When you take responsibility for your actions, your habits, and your direction, something shifts.

You stop repeating the same patterns.
You stop waiting for change.

You realize how capable you are.

Do you trust an AI with your email?

You may swap privacy for productivity. 

Google’s Deep Research can already read through Gmail, Drive, and Chat to generate research summaries.

Microsoft’s can do the same inside 365.

And now, ChatGPT through its new Connectors, you can link your Gmail or Outlook account directly to the model.

Three of the biggest players now have AI systems that can read your inbox, summarize your messages & draft replies for you.

That’s powerful.
But it also raises the some questions:

- What are you giving access to?
- How long will it keep your data?
- Who else can see what the AI reads?
- Can you fully revoke access later?

The line between “help me find an invoice” and “let me index your inbox forever” depends entirely on defaults and consent.

It’s true that many of us have already given companies the ability to access our emails for years. 

So what’s the difference now? 

AI changes the nature, scale, and meaning of that access in 4 big ways:

1. Access shifts from passive storage to active reading.

Historically, providers kept your email and scanned for security or spam. AI systems can read, interpret, summarize, analyze, and extract patterns across your entire inbox.

That is a different level of capability and a different level of risk.

2. It is no longer about single messages. It is about your entire history.

AI can instantly synthesize:

- years of conversations
- relationships & power dynamics
- financial patterns
- behavioral signals
- health clues
- personal habits

Providers always held this data, but AI can now understand it.

3. The level of access expands massively.

In the old model, scanning happened behind the scenes for narrow purposes. In the AI model, third party apps, plugins, and assistant features can access emails in real time for tasks you initiate.

That creates new:

(1) data pipelines
(2) risk points
(3) trust dependencies

It’s not a closed internal system. 
It’s an ecosystem.

4. The intent changes from operational support to intelligence generation. This is the biggest shift.

Old email access = spam filtering, security, categorization.

New AI access = generating insights, making decisions, writing on your behalf.

The AI is not just holding your data.
It is thinking with it.

Bottom line…

It’s not simply that Google & Microsoft already have email access. 

The question is:

What does it mean when companies with email access can now deeply analyze it, model behavior, and generate intelligence from it instantly?

That’s the leap.
That’s the risk.

That’s why consent and design matter more than ever.

Speed is easy to sell.

But trust… 
that’s the product people actually want.

What would you trade for convenience?

Stop trying to be break-proof. 

Build for bounce back.

We’re taught to design systems that are fail-safe.
But resilience isn’t about never falling down.

It’s about how fast we get back up. 
It's what we learn in the process.

Speed & adaptability matter most.

When things break, there’s a window, a threshold.
- If recovery begins quickly, momentum builds.
- If it drags, damage compounds.

This applies to both people and teams. When a setback occurs, the first 24-72 hours determine whether we stabilize or spiral.
- In systems, it’s the critical recovery rate.
- In leadership, it’s the response rhythm.

5 qualities of highly resilient people/teams:

(1) Design for recovery, not perfection.
Ask this question: "If we fail tomorrow, how do we restore 80% of capacity in one day?" Create fallback plans, reroute paths, and playbooks for quick resets.

(2) Move fast to regain momentum. 
Recovery is like a muscle; it strengthens through use. After a disruption, run short, visible wins to restore confidence and signal progress.

(3) Know thresholds.
Systems collapse when they cross invisible lines. People do too. Identify your "too broken" point before you reach it, and build early warning signals around it.

(4) Don’t bounce back. Bounce forward.
True resilience isn’t returning to what was. It’s transforming into what’s next.
Every crisis is data, and every disruption is feedback.

(5) Build recovery habits.
Don't be caught off guard. Reflect even for small setbacks. Ask "What was surprising?" and "What supported a fast recovery?"

Resilience isn’t a trait.
It’s a design choice.

We can’t eliminate failure, but we can build systems and teams that learn, adapt, and come back stronger every time.

The goal isn’t to be unbreakable.
It’s to be unstoppable.

Human connection is collapsing one unnoticed moment at a time.

A woman stood in line at a store with her arms full. Right next to her a man scrolled on his phone with both hands free (his items were already on the belt) 

He never looked up.
He never offered to help.
He never noticed her struggling.

Simply moving his items forward to make room would have helped. 

It was absence, not malice.
A quiet kind of disengagement that has become strangely normal.

We live in a world where people can stand inches apart yet remain miles away in awareness.

Not because they are bad, but because they are distracted.

Detached.
Pulled inward.
Lost in their own loop.

Moments like this remind me of the impact that the smallest choices can have.

Awareness is a choice.
Presence is a choice.
Kindness is a choice.

You can’t control how others show up.
But you can control how you move through the world.

You can choose to notice.
You can choose to engage.
You can choose to be the person who steps in instead of stepping back.

A meaningful life is built through attention, and attention is an act of care.
