Dr. Eugenin combines a strong background in biological basic sciences with the pathogenesis of infectious diseases as well as the development of potential therapeutic approaches. Dr. Eugenin is a recognized expert on HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, NeuroAIDS and flaviviral infection of the brain. His laboratory mission is to examine the mechanism by which viruses attack the central and peripheral nervous system and their impact in global health. He has more than 20 years of experience working in neuroscience, infectious disease and translation research. Since 2012 has been part of the Public Health Research Institute (www.PHRI.org) in Newark, NJ as an associate professor in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Rutgers University. As part of PHRI he expanded his research into agents that cause encephalitis and CNS compromise, such as dengue, West Nile and Japanese encephalitic virus, in addition to HIV infection of the brain. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY in the department of Pathology. From 1996 to 2010, he performed his Ph.D. studies in Chile and Germany, working in the role of connexin channels in inflammation. Dr. Eugenin is the authors of over 50 papers on different aspects of neuroscience, virology, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. He has serve in numerous international grants, scientific advisory committees and boards.
