Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health

This is an unpaid position in which I am gaining valuable research experience. I review medical papers submitted to the journal. I asses their methods, data, and results and provide critiques and more general feedback. I correspond with the editor of the journal and authors of the studies submitted to ensure the process of publication progresses smoothly. I really enjoy the opportunity to read and share my thoughts on new research.

Peer reviewer/Advisor 

I wrote an editorial for this peer-reviewed journal on the importance of HPV vaccination in men. I  used credible sources such as the websites of the CDC, WHO, and scientific papers to identify key themes, and what the consensus is on this important issue. It was then reviewed by journal reviewers, and published

Irish Medical Times

I wrote 3 articles per month for the Irish Medical Times (IMT) from April to July of 2023. As there is a huge amount of research available around vaccines and vaccine hesitancy, it also requires being hugely detail-oriented, as well as having strong research skills. As IMT has a diverse reader base, I need to have excellent communication skills for collaborating, as well as adaptability to different personality types. Finally, I also have to be able to manage multiple projects and adjust content according to feedback from their publishers, editors etc. Therefore, I have to be able to give and receive criticism and feedback constructively. I submit 3 articles each month; which requires a drive to stay focused,  meet deadlines, and achieve goals. For instance, each of my first 3 pieces of content published were viewed hundreds of times within a matter of weeks. Please find linked below some samples of my writing with them.

In this work placement I practiced microscopy, sample preparation techniques such as Gram staining, and PCR. Identification of pathogens in different animal sample types was also covered. 

I also got experience in general management of a laboratory including stock-taking, poster design, and event promotions.  I was also trained in inputting client details into their computer system, and ensuring samples were regularly collected and processed properly.

I joined this calling team in 2018, which is an integral part of the campaign to fund some worthwhile projects in the college; including the Student Hardship fund, medical research, as well as many others. There was a huge emphasis on verbal communication in this role which I really enjoyed. 

I was responsible for calling a list of alumni in each shift, and making them aware of the various projects ongoing in the college and the positive impact they have on a huge number of lives. They could then choose to make a donation to one or more project(s), to make a general donation to the  campaign, or to not donate.

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

I am hugely passionate about pathology, and how pathologies are treated. This internship was focused on developing gel biomaterials that facilitate the regrowth of bone around them in osteoporosis patients. 

I was fortunate to work with people from a range of backgrounds including Medicine, Pharmacy, and Biology. This meant that I was trained in a variety of lab techniques; from basics such as light and computer-based microscopy and pipetting, to more advanced; such as H&E staining of specimens during preparation, to the safe use of a microtome, as well as precision when sectioning specimens. Dissection of mice and identification of organs was also demonstrated.

Research Internship

I have many useful skills that I have developed professionally. These include laboratory skills, administration, and fundraising. I also have particular strengths in donor care. I can create value for any organisation through relationship building. I also write about vaccine hesitancy in my spare time and am always open to collaborations in the area
