For POPSUGAR UK, I spoke to dozens of mums about the financial realities of maternity leave - from dipping into savings, side-hustling during nap time, to going back to work far earlier than planned. FYI: ▪️Statutory maternity pay in the UK is just £184.03 a week after six weeks - less than half of minimum wag. ▪️Only 1 in 4 mums take their full leave ▪️ 76% go into debt or use savings to get by The numbers are bleak, but if you’re an expecting mum - I don’t want to scare you!! Within those gentle voicenotes and naptime interviews, I also heard about the pause - sudden clarity - and MANY a business quietly launched during naptimes. I heard about the joy of spending that gorgeous stretch of time with your baby (priceless!!). In some cases, I heard about the decision to change careers. But most don’t talk about it - in fact, new research from Peanut App, Tommee Tippee and Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) shows 43% have never shared how they really feel. When I became a mum, I understood why. It’s hard to admit you’re struggling - especially when the narrative is all about how lucky you are. For Maternal Mental Health Week, I wrote for Stylist Magazine about the quiet loneliness so many mothers feel - and ways we start to find connection again. From WhatsApp groups to 3am voice notes to one honest question in a baby class, even one person saying “me too” can make all the difference. Because yes - we KNOW motherhood is joy, wonder and bone-deep love. But it’s also okay to say: this is hard, and I need someone.
