Webtelligence was a small online publisher with a focus on entertainment. I started as a web editor for the movie site (UptoMovie) but moved on to editor in chief of all 4 sites (UptoMovie, UptoGame, UptoMusic, UptoByte) very quickly. Besides maintaining our own sites, Webtelligence also supplied content to companies such as Microsoft, Concentra and WorldOnline.

Doing user research right means steering clear from biases. Sounds easy, right? It isn't.

There are many ways you can bias your research and potentialy invalidate your data.

In surveys, one thing I see very frequently is leading questions. Questions that in themselves hold the desired answer. And in doing so, nudge users' answers in that direction.

For example:
❌ How fast would you say our customer service response time was?
❌ How easy was it to complete your purchase?

That's basically like saying you think it was fast. And it was easy. You just want to know how fast or easy.

If you use a positive adjective in a question, also include its negative counterpart.

Like this:
✅How fast or slow would you say our customer service response time was?
✅How hard or easy was it to complete your purchase?
