The recent passing of Charlie Kirk spawned..... quite a lot, to say the least.

In order from "sadly predictable" to "wait, what?":

🔶 Gun stocks up. Obviously 
🔶 Meme coins launched. Of course 
🔶 Prediction markets started taking bets on everything. And I mean EVERYTHING    🤨
🔶 A South Park episode got axed. The most random cultural casualty 

We've officially entered the era of financializing everything instantly. 

It's equal parts impressive and terrifying.

Have we finally gone too far, or is this just the inevitable price of an open market?

New entrants often see sub-Saharan Africa’s 200M+ population and think the digital banking market is huge, but in reality, only about 5 million people are actually ready to adopt digital banking.

It’s not just about having the tech or downloads anymore. Real adoption hinges on activation readiness, trust, digital literacy, and ecosystem support are critical.

McKinsey reports over 60% of mobile money accounts in some markets are inactive. Even big players like MTN and Airtel are shifting from chasing signup numbers to focusing on daily active users and true financial inclusion.

So, before betting on massive total addressable markets, the real question is: how viable are these adoption numbers?

I almost scrolled past another "prediction markets are the future" post yesterday.

Then I remembered the Charlie Kirk incident, and I couldn't stay quiet.

After his murder, contracts popped up on multiple platforms betting on whether he'd "appear again" or if civil war would follow. 

The platforms eventually removed them, but not before people placed actual bets on a dead man's legacy.

This isn't theoretical anymore. 

We've crossed a line.

I've spent years watching fintech evolve, and I genuinely believe prediction markets have potential. 

 ▶️ They've crushed traditional polls in accuracy. 

 ▶️ They've helped model pandemic risks. 

When used right, they're powerful.

But "when used right" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

The moment you financialize death, you create perverse incentives. 

You hand bad actors a playbook: cause chaos, profit from prediction. 

And because most of these markets are thinly traded, a few players with capital can manipulate odds and create false narratives that the media then amplifies as truth.

We're dealing with assassination markets, not in a cyberpunk novel, but on platforms you can access right now from your phone.

The path forward isn't to ban prediction markets. 

 ▶️ It's to build them with integrity baked in from day one. 

 ▶️ Clear boundaries on tradable events. 

 ▶️ Real moderation. 

 ▶️ Incentive structures that punish manipulation and reward accuracy.

This industry is at a fork in the road. 

One path leads to innovation that improves decision-making across finance, governance, and public health. 

The other leads to moral hazard and regulatory backlash that kills the technology entirely.
