The hardest feedback I ever received? “You’re always ‘on’—it can be hard for people to tell when something’s actually wrong.” At first, I brushed it off. I’ve always been someone who leads with positivity. I believe in being steady, encouraging, and bringing good energy to the room. But what I didn’t realize was that constant positivity, especially in tough situations, can feel unsettling to others. Some people even told me I came across as fake…until they got to know me and realized this is truly who I am. That stung. Because it wasn’t fake. It was just the version of me that had learned to power through. Since then, I’ve learned to share more of the in-between moments. To be honest when things are hard. To let people in a little earlier. Leadership isn’t about being endlessly cheerful, it’s about being real. And when people feel that from you, they trust you more, not less. It's okay to admit when things are hard, or uncertain, or when you don't have all the answers. Vulnerability builds trust, it doesn't erode it.
