Ankara Bulletin is a biweekly magazine which aims to help business professionals to monitor important legislative and administrative developments in Turkey. Bulletin also focuses on harmonization of laws and regulations in Turkey with EU Acquis Communautaire. In order to achieve these goals it also sheds light on the latest developments in the EU and outcomes of national and international institutional communication platforms between the governmental bodies and business world occasionally.

AKDAG co-designed the first bulletin in his first year at TUSIAD (2003) and prepared most or all of its content untill his promotion as the Representative of TUSIAD. Starting with 2010 he's been contributing to the publication as the Executive Editor and Writer.

SFDR, CSRD, EU Taxonomy, CSDDD on a short 

❗SFDR, Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, aims to increase transparency in the financial market by requiring financial market participants and financial advisers in the EU to disclose how they integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into their investment decisions and advisory processes.
 It includes disclosure requirements at both the entity and product levels, focusing on how sustainability risks are integrated and how adverse sustainability impacts are considered.

❗The CSRD, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, expands the existing non-financial reporting requirements, aiming to improve the quality and scope of sustainability information that companies must report.

It applies to large (and in the future all companies above 10 employees following LSME and VSME Standards) companies and all companies listed on regulated markets (except micro-enterprises), requiring them to disclose information on their sustainability risks, impacts, and activities, following detailed reporting standards. If a company has a turnover and balance sheet above the limits set by the Accounting Directive, it can also have less than 250 employees and be considered a large company.

❗ The EU Taxonomy is a classification system, establishing a list of environmentally sustainable economic activities. It aims to guide and encourage private investment in sustainable projects and activities.

It provides criteria for determining whether an economic activity is environmentally sustainable, focusing on six environmental objectives, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, water and marine resources, circular economy, pollution prevention, and biodiversity.

❗The CSDDD, Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, aims to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behavior throughout global supply chains. It requires companies to identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for adverse impacts of their activities on human rights and the environment.

It applies to large EU and non-EU companies operating in the EU market, mandating due diligence processes that cover human rights, labor rights, and environmental standards across their supply chains and operations.

Green Steel: Pathways for the New Hydrogen-powered DRI-EAF Projects
2-DRI-EAF uses #hydrogen (#H2) to produce direct reduced iron (#DRI), which is then processed in an electric arc furnace (#EAF) to produce steel. The two main challenges are ensuring an adequate supply of DR-grade iron ore, and cutting the end-to-end cost of making hydrogen. But right now, clean green hydrogen production is in its infancy, and therefore so are green steel plans. Soroush Basirat at #IEEFA surveys the landscape, looking at the U.S., Europe, Australia, the Middle East, the major steel firms, gas as a transition fuel, decoupling ironmaking from steelmaking, and the possible pathways. Basirat also includes a table of sixteen large-scale greenfield DRI projects. And he quotes analysts who say the coming hydrogen economy should prioritise powering steel: of all the possible uses of hydrogen, steel production offers the most emissions reduction opportunities. The prospects for hydrogen and steel are surely welded together.

Key findings
⭕ The H2-DRI-EAF process shows significant promise in decarbonising the steel sector, but challenges must be addressed to achieve genuinely green steel through hydrogen reduction.
⭕ In the race towards green steel production via DRI-EAF, the utilisation of gas is merely an intermediate measure and should not perpetuate reliance on fossil fuels in steelmaking.
⭕ More realism is needed when it comes to green hydrogen: production is likely to be more limited and expensive than often forecast, and its use should be prioritised for sectors like steel where it can deliver major emissions cuts.

Green hydrogen is set to transform the steel industry. Hydrogen-based direct reduction (DR) technology is already leaving behind other decarbonisation solutions for primary steelmaking such as carbon capture and storage (CCS).
H2-DRI-EAF involves the use of hydrogen (H2) to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), which is then processed in an electric arc furnace (EAF) to produce steel. In the #BloombergNEF net-zero outlook, 64% of the total primary #steel production projected for 2050 is associated with H2-DRI-EAF, followed at 25% by DRI-EAF equipped with #CCS technology. The remaining share is allocated to blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking and other technologies.
In its revised net-zero roadmap 2023, the International Energy Agency (#IEA) envisions that 44% of iron production will be derived from hydrogen-based processes by 2050, followed by other technologies including CCS and direct iron ore electrolysis.

Conducting materiality assessment? Here is what the social ESRS is about!

The ESRS social component encompasses the social draft topical standards (ESRS S1–S4), offering a structured approach for organizations to disclose information concerning their social impact and responsibilities. 

It addresses various issues, including remuneration, working conditions, health and safety, diversity, forced labor, child labor, community involvement, and consumer protection. The objective of ESRS social is to promote best practices, foster a responsible culture, and improve management of social and environmental performance.

Interestingly, there is a value chain perspective on the social impacts and financial material risks and opportunities. When looking at the below mentioned areas of disclosure it is obvious that there is a lot of different topics and sub-topics and furthermore a lot of different potentials for data management and business administration and strategic decision-making, and finally governance and organisaiton.

🌿 The event will bring together experts and practitioners from Member States, business and trade associations, companies, consultancies, auditors and other stakeholders. Its goal is to showcase ongoing initiatives and discuss ideas for further mechanisms to support companies that apply the new reporting standards.

During the event, Patrick de Cambourg, Chair of EFRAG SRB, will present EFRAG's plans to facilitate the implementation of ESRS.

This is a hybrid event, which can be attended in person on a first-come-first-served basis or by connecting virtually.

The European Environment Agency's Climate Risk Assessment offers some dire warnings. I made a few slides to summarize this critical report.

Key messages:
-Worsening droughts and changes in rainfall patterns in Southern Europe are threatening food production and increasing desertification
-Europe’s climate risks are interconnected with other environmental risks and social challenges
-Without action, impacts from coastal floods alone could cause economic losses of 1TN Euros annually by late in the 21st century
-Effective action demands both societal preparedness, national and local policies, and EU-wide coordination

European Climate Risk Assessment Summary Slides

The interplay between good governance and ESG is crucial.
Rules are shaped by the EU Taxonomy (EU TR), which is reflected in the reporting directive, CSRD, and often assured through the lens of ISSA 5000 (new assurance protocols are still pending). The interface of reporting, assurance, and definition is beginning to take shape, although there is still a long way to go. Even the accounting of these metrics is under construction and development.

To emphasize the importance of systems thinking, due diligence principles, and the accountability of business activities, the Due Diligence Directive outlines the principles for due diligence in the value chain.

How to create a strong ESG position?
This graphic illustrates the key benefits of not only adapting to the rules of this new era but also pivoting reporting towards principles and operational excellence to accelerate ESG performance. By doing so, companies may achieve better top-line growth, have more impactful interactions with regulation, and meet legal requirements. Furthermore, companies can reduce their long-term costs, invest in and plan their CapEx and asset optimization, and enhance their productivity.

Finally, strong ESG positioners are likely characterized by enhanced strategic planning and execution (including financial leverage and capital structure) and improved investment returns through better long-term capital allocation (e.g., more sustainable plants and equipment). They also benefit from increased financial transparency, better cash flow management, strategic freedom through deregulation, and improved social credibility and talent attraction.

In a context of urgent need for the European Union to increase investments in line with climate and environmental targets, with a focus on private financial markets as crucial contributors, our new report proposes a methodological framework to monitor capital flows to sustainable investments. This framework considers both real economy entities and financial market transactions, with the sustainable finance regulatory framework serving as the starting and defining point. The methodology, outlined in the report, aims to track various financial instruments, particularly those with sustainability features, and will evolve over time to encompass a broader range of entities and instruments. Ultimately, the goal is to provide insights into sustainable finance trends, investment needs at the economic activity level, and to inform policymaking.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a game-changer for #European #sustainability. This EU regulation mandates standardized reporting on #environmental and #social impact for large companies and specific #SMEs.  

It goes beyond just disclosure, requiring companies to consider "#doublemateriality" - how sustainability issues affect their business and how their actions impact the #environment and #society. Reported information is audited for accuracy, fostering trust.

CSRD Explained!

ESG vs. anti-ESG . . . Hey everyone - let's just call it something else!

Just kidding.

I am a lawyer at heart. In law, words are everything. 

What's the most important part of a contract? The 20 pages of definitions that we put at the front. (not kidding)

Maybe that's why this ESG terminology debate drives me crazy.

That said, the media hype has created a lot of confusion around what these terms actually mean.

So here is my contribution to making things better.

The Sustainability Standards Board of Japan（SSBJ）has published draft sustainability disclosure standards, based on those of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).

The standards have been divided into the Universal Sustainability Disclosure Standard, covering the application of sustainability disclosure standards, and two “theme-based” sustainability disclosure standards for general disclosures and climate-related disclosures.

The SSBJ said the decision to divide the ISSB’s standard on general sustainability disclosures (IFRS S1) into two separate standards was taken for the “convenience” of users.

The SSBJ said it does not expect the division of S1 to affect resulting disclosures, as all the standards will need to be applied simultaneously. It added that it “recognises the importance of ensuring consistency with the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, which serve as the global baseline”.
