Most people who know me would describe me as focused and energetic, and I don’t disagree with that. I am extremely driven and dedicated to making an impact as a leader, whether it’s leading a city or leading a company, and I’m always looking for a way to make things better and more efficient. The fundamentals in the private or public sector are the same: create or perpetuate the vision, generate the systems, processes and procedures that move that vision forward, and produce a plan and appoint the funds that set the whole thing in motion. Then you either need to create, build or equip the team that is going to achieve all these steps and make them accountable for their portion of the plan. This is my signature process for how I achieve goals. I have high expectations for myself, which is certainly directly attributable to growing up on a farm in Ohio, as the grandson of a woman who was a refugee from Estonia during World War II, and as a second generation American. This background makes me grateful for the privilege I have, and makes me want to work hard, give back and be of service – building my community, exemplifying my faith, and leaving my mark behind on projects and processes that are significant. (This background also gives me a love for large equipment!) A rapid fire, but steady approach to decision making is essential to this. While I am good at juggling opposing sides and negotiation, I believe that it is important to just pull the trigger sometimes. In my quest to become an entrepreneurial, yet humble leader, I have developed a strong group of skills, including: leadership development, organizational development, economic development, operational management, strategic planning, visioning, budgeting, change management, right sizing, process improvement, planning, consulting, manufacturing management, and municipal government management.
