During my transition from the Marine Corps into the corporate sector, I was astonished by the lack of knowledge that the hiring managers and corporate executives had about military leadership.  They had the same assumptions that officers just gave orders and the subordinates willfully obeyed.  There is nothing further from the truth than that assumption.  We don't magically make people run into harm's way just because we said so.  Leadership is a skill.  It doesn't matter if it is a military leader or a corporate leader; without leadership skills, the boss is just a jerk.

In this lecture series, we break the stereotype of veteran leaders who are not afforded the benefit of their experiences.  I continue by sharing lessons I learned in leadership during my time as a Marine Corps Officer and afterward.

CH-46E Pilot / MV-22B Pilot;  Officer in key leadership and department head positions.

Additional Functions performed:
-Preside over Administrative Separations Boards (releasing a Marine from Active Service for just cause)
-Preside over Military Occupational Specialty Competency Board (determining a Marine's ability to continue is current role at their current rank)
-Member of a Field Flight Performance Boards
-Member of Flight School Performance Boards
-Investigator of Class A MISHAP in determining any criminal intent

Major

Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for this role.  (Citation written in Awards and Honors section)

Led and managed the strategic and operational planning and execution of aviation-based missions in the eastern Asia region.
- Six subordinate squadrons with 2,200 employees, 66 aircraft, and >$200M in support equipment.

Department head leading five subordinate divisions and seven project managers.

Successfully negotiated with the Government of Japan to gain more MV-22 training locations in their country.

Ensured six squadrons had successful deployments in support of US Forces Japan by providing top level support to each unique unit.

Created data analytics and presented them to the executive leaders to persuade strategic pursuit that benefit the whole organization.

Presided over two promotion forums, three administration separations board, and one MOS competency board.

Operations Officer (Director of Operations) - Marine Aircraft Group 36

Responsible for the planning, training, and the execution of aviation missions in eastern Asia.   Negotiated with the Government of Japan for the training locations of the MV-22B to reach their Mission Essential Task requirements.

Created strategic plans for the Aircraft Group for various scenarios that threaten the position of the US and its allies.

Responsible to the Director of Operations the supervision and guidance of the Current Operations Division, Future Operations Division, Flight Ops/Training Division, the Ground Training Division and the Force Generating Technicians.

Assistant Director of Operations - Marine Aircraft Group 36

Awarded the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal for this role in conjunction with prior role as Director of Maintenance

MV-22B Pilot
Directed and managed $976M in aircraft and support equipment.
Conceptualized and supervised the transition of 200 personnel from helicopter to tiltrotor maintenance.
Achieved the highest program rating out of a group of 27 maintenance departments in the region.

Department Head / Director of Aircraft Maintenance - VMM-364 "Purple Foxes"

Awarded the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal in conjunction with subsequent role

CH-46E Pilot 
Flew the last CH-46E of the Fleet Marine Force.  

Showcased the aircraft to the public as it was being transitioned out of the Marine Corps.

Responsible for the maintenance and operational readiness of 12 CH-46E aircraft.  Led the department to achieve the highest rating in the region with 88.8% readiness of aircraft in my tenure.

Transformed a failing maintenance department that could get only one aircraft operational and didn’t pass an inspection into the best maintenance department in all of MAG-39 (FitRep comment by MAG CO).  Passed the CNAF with the highest score at the time and was able to get all twelve aircraft operational in one month after taking over.

Fought wild fires in San Diego county to include my own neighborhood.

Department Head / Director of Aircraft Maintenance - HMM-364 "Purple Foxes"

CH-46E Pilot
Ensured the FAA and military aviation compliance of 26 pilots and 22 crew chiefs.
Enhanced safety policies which resulted in zero aircraft-related incidents under my direction.

Department Head / Director of Safety and Standardization - HMM-268 "Red Dragons"

Provided human resource support and workplace training for a regional unit with 5,000 employees.

Human Affairs Director - Marine Aircraft Group 39

Awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal for this role.

Conducted risk management and assessments in dynamic conditions.

Recognized potential adverse consequences of decisions in a combat environment.

Collaborated with the Logistics Department in coordinating effective and efficient transportation of people and equipment throughout the region.

Assistant Air Liaison Officer - 1st Marine Division

Directed and managed critical skills training for four subordinate units with over 6,000 employees.

Director of Operations - Fifth Marine Regiment (Rear)

Supervised and evaluated 12 subordinate unit aviation liaisons who provided subject matter expertise to their managers.

Assistant Air Liaison Officer - Fifth Marine Regiment

Instructed new aviators in flight operations of advanced military helicopters.
Managed the training programs of over 40 instructors and 150 students.
Collaborated with other aircraft communities in streamlining flight training.

CH-46E Instructor / Student Control Officer - HMM(T)-164 "Knightriders"

Awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Strike / Flight Air Medal for this role

Combat Operations in Iraq.

Contributed as a pilot to the Casualty Evacuation Mission in Iraq for three different deployments.

Manager of different maintenance divisions (approx 40 employees in each division)  to mature as a leader in the department in which I would assist the director of aircraft maintenance operations.
