EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 

Your summary breaks down more about your areas of impact and your distinct approach. It highlights key experience and leadership skills. It expands on the branding statement, adding more detail and painting a more complete picture of your professional impact. A strong summary shows that you know who you are and what you have to offer to a potential employer.


MANIFESTO 

A manifesto-style summary is rare and typically only used by those who have put a great deal of time and energy into innovating in their field and those who have built a name in their field. For this rare candidate, I would afford more room in the top third of the resume to provide the context, unique vision, and philosophies they could bring to a new opportunity. 


MISSION 

A mission statement reveals what you think is important and why you do what you do. Not everyone has a meaningful mission statement, purpose, or Why behind their work. If you DO, it might help set you apart as an exceptional candidate. 

* Don’t confuse a mission statement with an objective statement, which is very dated and self-serving, focusing on short-term corporate wants (like professional development or room for growth) as opposed to broad motivations that keep you contributing on a high level (such as accelerating time to market for clinical treatments).

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲

The resume’s function has evolved over the years. It has become more streamlined and focused on communicating a clear message as opposed to simply listing career history.


📅 In the 2000s, Templates became prolific. While they can add polish, they can also introduce problematic formatting elements and inadvertently steer users to content strategies that might not work well for them. (For example, two column resumes don’t tend to perform as well when subjected to both human readers and screening platforms.) 

LinkedIn grew in popularity and people started to use it as an integral part of their job search. Other online Job Boards also became popular and resumes adjusted based on their functionality.

📅 In the 2010s, resumes took on a more journalistic style, focusing on relevant experience and accomplishments to the target position and cutting out everything else. 

A 2018 eye-tracking study revealed that recruiters read in an E-shape formation or F-shape formation, so we started seeing resumes front-load key takeaways to inform reader’s perception of the candidate. 

📅 Now, in the 2020s, resumes focus more on mobile readability, as many hiring authorities read resumes on their phones or tablets. 

AI sourcing and screening tools have increased the importance of using current phrasing and building social proof beyond the resume.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯 

Your job search doesn’t end until you sign the offer. Once you get an offer, negotiate for salary and other benefits. 

If you remain in the process for roles at other companies, continue going through the process until the offer is signed. Alert them that you’ve received an offer, they may expedite the hiring process or make you a better offer. Having two or more offers allows you to leverage each against the other and negotiate a high salary.

Once you sign an offer, alert the other companies you were in the process with. Thank them for their time and consideration and tell them you’ve found another job. Don’t ghost anyone or burn bridges; even if the opportunity isn’t a current fit, another opportunity might arise in the future.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀

We can expect multiple touchpoints in the hiring process. Each touchpoint allows us to build credibility and earns us greater confidence. For this reason, don’t try to “skip a step” for high-level job searches. Automating outreach or skipping a cover letter / e-note may be easier in the moment, but it actually robs you of an opportunity to connect with the hiring authority. 

Here is a sample framework you can use to build a relationship with hiring authorities in a productive way.

1. INTRO / OUTREACH — Send an email introducing yourself. If you have already applied, let them know you applied. 

If you have not applied and this is cold outreach, include an “easy ask” question to encourage a response. Usually this is a quick tip, such as “Should I get this certification? Join this group?” If you receive a response, ask to book a brief conversation.  

2. CONVERSATION — A brief chat can open up your world quite a bit! Come with a few conversation starters, a few questions, some succinct success stories, and (if possible) add value by offering introductions, tips on new tools / tech, etc. 

3. FOLLOW UP — After a few weeks, send a formal follow-up note asking about the progress of your topics of conversation. This could be related to the hiring process, a project they were working on, etc.

4. VALUE ADD — Share something your contact might find interesting, such as an article or podcast. 

5. CAREER COLLATERAL — Send another piece of career collateral, such as a bio. 

6. CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION — Stay in conversation with them, reaching out every so often to ask questions or share information.

7. ADDITIONAL CAREER COLLATERAL — Send another piece of career collateral, like a networking piece with a photo. 

8. RESEARCH (SOCIAL PROOF) — Research company / employee social activity on LinkedIn. Follow them and engage on relevant posts. Additionally, write articles and / or post on LinkedIn about topics in your field of expertise to establish credibility and build out your social proof. 

9. INTERVIEW — Prepare your success stories and questions for the company / hiring team. Also, ask follow-up questions to uncover hiring priorities. 

10. FOLLOW UP — After the interview, stay in contact by following up every 2-3 weeks. Ask if there’s anything you can do to help the process. Continue following up every few weeks. If the relationship is strong, continue this even if someone else is hired. There may be another opportunity for you in the future.
