Erika Shepard Keynote Speaker

Erika Shepard is a former psychiatric nurse, heart-led consultant, and international speaker who has spoken on stages like TEDx. She is focused on elevating the health and well-being of people and organizations through her unique approach of optimizing the quality of our connections and relationships.
 
Erika is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of both Arizona State and Georgetown University. She spent her career having a front row seat to human heartbreak through working as a psychiatric, trauma ICU, and forensic nurse, as well as family nurse practitioner and mind body practitioner for over the last decade. Working with people at their most vulnerable has shown her the power of the human heart, and the necessity of deep connection to ourselves and one another. She now bridges the science of her medical training with the heart of her professional and personal experiences.
 
Currently she is passionate about changing the world by empowering others to create healthier environments through relational optimization. It is Erika’s mission through her Movement, Capable Hearts, to create a world where it is safe for us to open our hearts to connect more authentically so we elevate both our mental and physical health.

Psych ICU RN for severe mental health cases. Developed and implemented a plan of care for a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Patient population was diverse, including the homeless, uninsured, wealthy, and postpartum, across a broad spectrum of races, religions, and cultures. Assessed and managed medical detox, administered medications, provided wound care, managed medical and psychiatric crises (e.g. Code Grey Takedowns, Cardiac/Respiratory Emergencies, Diabetic Crises, Medical Disorders & Seizures), provided discharge planning and instruction.

RN at Forensic Outpatient Clinic (population of mentally ill who are on probation or who have committed a serious offense in the past), Drug and Alcohol Program (tbd), and Deerfield Residential (residential unit for mentally ill who are not sick enough to be inpatient but not stable enough to be in the community). Duties include Vivitrol and antipsychotic injections and education, creating and implementing plan of care, medication monitoring, nurse reviews, patient follow-up, monitoring vital signs and trends, and providing support to patient's and their families.

UPMC

•	Professional Staff Nurse in Trauma ICU; this includes developing/implementing an integrative, customized plan of care for individual patients with traumatic injuries, with occasional care of cardiac patients. Duties include providing emotional support and education to families and patients, trending labs and vitals, monitoring cardiac rhythms, managing acute dialysis with CRRT, managing IV’s and medications, hemodialysis patients, attending to wound care, coordinating with doctors and case managers and families, and tending to medical emergencies (i.e. Code Blue, psychiatric crises, etc.).

•	Core Staff/Charge Nurse on Acute Adult Psychiatric Unit with specialized intensive care monitoring area.  Developed/implemented a plan of care for wide ranging and diverse psychiatric disorders. Patient population was diverse, including the homeless, uninsured, wealthy, and postpartum, with a wide range of race, religion, and cultures. I am a nurse practitioner who has gone from healing human body systems to also healing business culture systems. I spent the first part of my career running psychiatric wards as a nurse where people were in a chronic state of stress and crisis.  

Providing leadership for all of these years as a psych nurse is where I found the unique ingredients to creating cultures where people feel cared for and valued. When people feel cared for and valued, they perform better, are healthier, and stay. It's a win win with cultures of care. 

I am now an international speaker dedicated to educating and empowering, and have spoken on stages like TEDx. I provide keynotes, workshops, and trainings on how to optimize company culture and elevate leadership.
