I believe in the power and promise of journalism to connect communities and give people the information they need to better their lives. I am visionary and strategic because I worked to earn those skills. Reading and writing taught me how to seek information and make connections. I developed critical thinking skills. And, when I landed my first job in marketing, I discovered numbers tell a story — the story of a company’s lifeline — so I learned how to read them. I honed my skills and expanded my understanding of market forces. Today, I serve as CEO of The Nation Fund for Independent Journalism. Our mission is to educate future journalists and support a strong and independent press. I created this non-profit during my tenure as President of The Nation. I saw a chance to expand impact for students, and remove financial pressure from the magazine, by spinning off this new entity. In start-up mode, we’ve grown donors by over 300% and expanded programs. In 2023, we will publish over 100 piece of student journalism and we launched a new, innovative fellowship: The Fellowship for the Future of Journalism. This paid, two-year fellowship, gives students a path to a career in journalism through extensive training and mentorship. My focuses include delivering outstanding productivity and exceeding goals across any size budget. I have a knack for developing new revenue streams. In my tenure at The Nation, I improved the bottom line by 30% by growing the customer funnel. As a consultant, I delivered wins and helped clients create sustainable business models. I have a track record of success developing, retaining, and managing employees. As Managing Director and Employee #1 at a start-up, I hired and nurtured a team while meeting clients’ needs and setting the culture in the office. I’ve managed through layoffs, company sales and labor negotiations and worked through tensions to promote a sense of safety and set a stage for success for my teams. Colleagues have followed me to new roles, and one has stuck with me since I first hired her 18 years ago. I’m a member of board of the Harpswell Anchor, a local non-profit newspaper, and I write a column each month. I’m proud to be a steward of the media industry and to help journalism flourish.
