The global financial system is entering a decisive phase. 

If the #tokenization thesis holds true, distributed ledgers may well become the superior mechanism to represent and transact value, offering 24/7 availability, shared 'gold copies' of data, #programmability, and atomic settlement.

A lot of what we hear in the public debate is framed around a binary choice between #CBDCs and #stablecoins.  

Citi’s RLN, Project Agora etc., are all outgrowths of a desire to forge a middle path. 

Namely, the tokenization of all regulated liabilities (CBDCs, commercial bank deposits, e-money) on a shared network. 

At its core, the thesis goes beyond disintermediating #banks or replacing private balance sheets towards upgrading the form factor of money itself.

But the path to a regulated internet of value isn’t without headwinds. 

We still have fragmented #standards across jurisdictions that risk creating a patchwork of incompatible networks, undermining interoperability. 

Settlement design needs to be squared away ensuring finality without introducing new systemic #risks.

Liquidity management (particularly in a multi-asset, multi-currency environment)  will also require new models.

And #legal certainty is paramount.

Tokenized liabilities must enjoy the same enforceability as account-based claims, including clarity on insolvency treatment. 

Achieving cross-border reciprocity will likely require bilateral or multilateral agreements, common supervisory playbooks, and even the use of omnibus accounts at central banks to facilitate foreign participants. 

Crucially, we shouldn’t discount the role of #publicblockchains in this future.

They remain the fastest-moving laboratories for innovation in #programmability, composability, and global settlement, proving out concepts like atomic swaps, cross-chain bridges, and real-time collateralization at scale. 

Even as regulated networks emerge, public chains may continue to set the pace, acting as a benchmark (and in some cases), a complementary settlement layer.

Money is after all a collective fiction.  

A ledger of trust. 

Tokenization re-writes that trust, turning value from something locked in ledgers into something that moves at the speed of software.
