Hi I'm Esther! I'm a fundraiser, nerd, and cat mom. Not in that order (have you met a cat? They won't be anything other than no.1). In my day to day, I'm a Community-Centric fundraiser and Principal and Founder at Elevate Philanthropy Consulting. I like to speak and write about nonprofit culture, equity, ethical storytelling, and justice. I've had the honour of supporting many nonprofits increase their revenue, implement fundraising processes and structures all in a way that is grounded in equity and justice. I'm committed to community work- fundraising is the vehicle through which I do this. I see fundraising as a way to to mobilize resources to communities. I see the nonprofit sector as the best place to challenge and dismantle systems of power such as white supremacy, colonialism, and extraction within our world. I am one of the sector's loudest critics because I know that nonprofit and philanthropy are microcosms of the best and worst of humanity. As James Baldwin wrote about America “I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." I love this sector more than any other sector in the world, and like Baldwin, it's why I insist on the right to criticize it. I stay in this sector and have a duty to hope that we can transform it. I refuse to subscribe to the underpinning values rampant in nonprofit such as white saviorism, colonialism, donor worship, poverty tourism, and overall self-congratulatory air that “we came into this sector to do good.” My purpose is to advance justice in the nonprofit sector. This purpose has led me to help build movements within Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF) as a Global Council member and Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Toronto Chapter, as an Interim Board Member.
