10 Things Not to Say 

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - you need more than one great talk.

But you shouldn't recreate the wheel every single time you're asked to speak.

I've observed that great speakers have a minimum of 2 talks with an average of 4.

I've also observed there are four types of keynotes you should consider having.

4 Keynotes Every Speaker Should Have

Never end your talk on a Q&A.

I see speakers do this all the time. They deliver a powerful presentation and then hand their final impression over to a stranger with a mic.

The person who has a "comment/opinion" not a question.

The person who asks something totally off topic.

Or the awkward silence of no one asking a question. 

I love Q&A just don't end on it. Instead answer the questions, have a pre-planned transition back into your content, and powerfully wrap up your talk.

But how do you avoid ending on when asked? This carousel breaks that down.

Never End Your Talk on a Q&A

Had a blast today giving a virtual presentation for Istoria’s Solo Con event.

I got so into the moment I forgot to take any photos as it was going 😂.

Stop wasting the first 7 seconds of your speech.

“When Joe invited me here today blah blah blah…” 

“Gosh this weather here in San Diego…”

The fix? The cold open. 

Don't build up lots of details, start right in the center of the action.

Instead of: "I want to tell you about a time I failed..." 

Try: "The screen went black, 500 people gasped, and I realized I’d lost my notes..."

Shaping and framing your story is easier when you answer these 8 questions. 

What stories do you share in your speech?

A hostile audience member.

Off-topic questions.

Tech fails.

None of these have to knock you off your game.

Most people practice for the big presentation. Few practice for the unexpected off the cuff moments.

The biggest thing I learned at my first job is email: subject line should always match the content, don’t put multiple topics in one email, copy anyone you mention, don’t have embarrassing typos, and for goodness sake be careful not to hit reply all.

A couple years ago, I spoke at an event and got caught totally off guard during Q&A.

An older gentleman asked me a fairly nuanced question about how to pitch his business to potential investors in an industry I didn’t know much about.

It was completely off topic, and I didn’t have a good answer. 😬

I stumbled through an answer, but I know I didn’t say anything of value.

Luckily, I do follow my own advice and never end a speech on a Q&A so I was able to come back and end my talk with a strong close, but I still left feeling a little deflated.

Over the next week, my mind kept looping back to his question and what I wished I’d said. 

Speaking is full of unexpected moments. The ones you can’t plan or prepare for.
The curveballs. The complicated, personal, and totally off-topic ones.

You're bound to get them. But, here's a secret: you have far more control over Q&A than you think.

This carousel walks through seven strategies you can use to help you stay confident, composed, and in control when the questions get tough.

How to Stay in Control of a Tough Q&A

Three ways to level up your speech content:

1️⃣ Keep a humor file.

Keep track of things you find amusing throughout the day and write a line or two about them on your list. When you are looking to add humor to a talk you have a reference point to start from.

2️⃣ Keep a story file.

At the end of every week self-reflect on things or experiences that happened to you during the week write a line or two about them. These don't have to be dramatic; they can be small. What is something crazy your kid said? Why was that Starbucks line so long? How did your lawn guy manage to run the mower over your flowers? These reflections can serve as inspiration to develop into longer stories later on.

3️⃣ Have a system for the content you consume.

Books. Podcasts. Movies. Sermons. Have a method for how you might reference these later in a talk. It might be dog-earring pages, using sticky notes, or typing up your takeaways. Find something that works for you, but you need to do something to keep track of the key ideas of what you consume so you can integrate it into your talks
