The seven biggest mistakes in forecasting:

1. Not leveraging your full data – You have years of sales history, yet most forecasts only look at the last 30 days.

2. Using sales velocity – Averages won’t capture seasonality, cyclicality, price variations, ad campaigns, or other external shocks. You end up with a “straight line forecast” in a world that moves in cycles.

3. Not correcting for anomalies – Stockouts, lightning deals, one-off promotions… if you don’t clean that history, you’re repeating the same errors in the future.

4. Relying on “gut feel” overrides – Human intuition is valuable, but when it consistently overrules data-driven models, it turns forecasts into guesses.

5. Ignoring external factors – Market trends, competitor actions, supply chain disruptions, or even weather can drastically impact demand. Forecasts built in a vacuum will always be fragile.

6. Treating all SKUs the same – Your hero products deserve a different level of modeling and attention than your long tail. One-size-fits-all forecasting is a recipe for blind spots.

7. Not updating forecasts frequently – Demand patterns change quickly. A forecast from six months ago won’t survive in today’s dynamic environment if it isn’t recalibrated.

The result? Stockouts, overstock, lost sales, wasted capital.

Forecasting isn’t about perfection. It’s about reducing uncertainty and creating a system where your data, your process, and your people all pull in the same direction.

$1.8 trillion! That’s how much commerce brands lose every year to inventory mismanagement.
