AI detection software does not work. Full stop. 

A new study from academic researchers shows (again) that these tools are extremely unreliable, and when simple anti-detection techniques are deployed their limited accuracy collapses. 

Which means if these tools catch AI cheating, it's bad AI cheating. 

While education institutions have relied on plaigarism detection tools as a response to internet research and Wikipedia, it makes sense that we would look for a similar tool for GenAI. 

But these tools are just not fit for purpose and can actively cause harm (see the UNG student on academic probation for using Grammarly). 

The way forward is not these detectors, but shifting our conversations about academic integrity, so we can have real conversations about how assessment has to change in the age of GenAI.

Is Khanmigo biased? How would we know? In our latest blog post, Melissa Warr, Nicole Oster, explore this and a other questions related to the use of generative AI in education. We've noticed some news stories about AI making mistakes, like a chatbot giving bad advice. This got us thinking about how unpredictable and weird AI can be. There is enough research to show that these systems exhibit biases  - not just explicitly but also implicitly. We believe that this is even more insidious and problematic. 

Matters are made more complicated by the fact that these systems are black boxes with companies providing little information on how they work and how they have been trained. This is not an argument for not using these tools but rather to figure out the best way forward.  

We think it's important for teachers to understand these AI things and how they work. Join us as we advocate for a techno-skeptical approach, emphasizing the importance of teaching with and about GenAI to ensure ethical and equitable educational practices. Read more here:

Research on XR for language instruction has been growing and increasingly revealing positive aspects of XR technology. This webinar will provide a comprehensive overview of XR technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) and their integration in language instruction. The session will begin with an introduction to XR technologies, elucidating their distinct features and capabilities. The introduction will be followed by an in-depth analysis of how these technologies can be effectively integrated into language instruction curricula, highlighting case studies and successful (and less successful) implementations. The presenter will offer insights into the practical applications, benefits, and challenges of the XR technology integration.
