A CEO shared at dinner: 
“Fei, the market is full of people looking for jobs…but very few who are hungry. I don’t need more CVs. I need people who want to win.”

He wasn’t talking about working 14 hours a day.

He meant hunger, that inner fire that doesn’t depend on titles, bonuses, or constant supervision.

So true! Over 19 years in executive search, I’ve noticed: 

Many people are skilled. Many people are experienced. But very few are hungry.

“Hunger” looks like this:
- You raise your hand before someone asks.
- You see opportunities where others see problems.
- You refuse to stay comfortable when you know you can grow.
- You play to win, not to be comfortable 

Hunger is the real competitive advantage.

Those who grow the fastest protect their attention the most.

They are not superhuman. They simply decide what deserves their mind, and what doesn’t. The master of career is also master of focus. 

In a world full of noise, attention is our rarest strength. Where your attention goes, your life follows.

Faced a huge challenge this morning:
Getting a teenager out of bed for school.
His aspiration? Freedom. 

Sound familiar? 

So many people (myself included) dream of freedom: no alarm clocks. no deadlines. no office politics. And then… we live happily ever after.

But is that really true?

Most of us don’t actually crave absolute freedom.
We crave freedom with direction —
Freedom within a framework that gives life rhythm, connection, and growth.

Because work gives us three invisible gifts:

1) Rhythm — It creates structure. Progress doesn’t come from chaos, but from consistency and focus.

2) Connection — It keeps us engaged with people. Through collaboration, we learn empathy, communication, and perspective.

3) Growth — Every challenge and responsibility expands our skills, resilience, and confidence.

Salary pays the bills. BUT,
Rhythm builds stability.
Connection builds perspective.
Growth builds confidence.

Work, at its best, isn’t just a duty, it’s one of the most practical forms of lifelong learning and self-mastery.

#WeekendPost  People don’t burn out from work. They burn out from how they talk to themselves.

This weekend, I hiked with an executive friend recovering from burnout. She told me:
“I didn’t burn out from work and politics. I burned out from constant self-criticism."

So true! We are often stuck with: “What did I do wrong?”

We’re taught to scan for flaws, push harder, be better. But we forget:
You don’t grow by attacking yourself.
You grow by rewarding yourself.

When you acknowledge yourself:
Your confidence rises.
Your energy returns.
Your mind becomes a friend again.

So instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?”
Ask, “What did I do right today?”

Sustainable success doesn’t come from self-criticism.
It comes from self-compassion.
From learning to clap for yourself before the world does.

When someone has never seen winter, arguing about snow is pointless.

Confucius’s student once met a man in green who claimed a year has three seasons. The student laughed. “Everyone knows there are four: spring, summer, autumn, and winter!”
They argued endlessly.

Finally, the student asked Confucius to decide.
To his surprise, Confucius said to both calmly,
“A year indeed has three seasons.”

The student was confused.
Confucius smiled:
“That man is a grasshopper. Born in spring, growing in summer, dying in autumn. He’s never seen winter. If you argue with him, he will never understand, and you will only exhaust yourself.”

When there’s a gap in understanding, there’s no need to prove who’s right.
Sometimes, losing the argument means winning your time and energy.

At work, when we meet people who only see three seasons.
They’re not wrong; they simply haven’t seen more yet.

It’s about listening, understanding, and helping others grow until they, 
too, can see four seasons.

How Kraft Heinz won the National Games, without being a sponsor? 
In Guangzhou, the 15th Chinese National Games have filled the city with excitement.

Athletes competed. Brands competed.
But the first to win hearts wasn’t an official sponsor.

The global Biopharma map is shifting. China just stepped onto center stage.

China was seen as the world’s manufacturing powerhouse and a fast follower in pharma. Not anymore.

At the 2025 Shanghai Bio-Forum, Thermo Fisher’s China President, Miguel Faustino, captured the new reality:
“We are combining global technology with local insight — helping China’s biopharma companies grow from local challengers into global pioneers.”

Today, China is Thermo Fisher’s second-largest market: 7 manufacturing sites; 2 R&D centers + 1 applications hub; 7,000 employees.

Behind that statement lies a profound shift in the global innovation landscape:
1) R&D — Chinese biotech pipelines are advancing faster than many Western peers, fueled by integration between academia, AI, and CRO ecosystems.
2) Quality — FDA and EMA fast-track channels for China-origin drugs have expanded every year since 2020.
3) Global integration — License-out deals by Chinese biotechs exceeded USD 48B in just the first half of 2025.

China is becoming a net exporter of pharmaceutical innovation, not just a consumer of it.

For global leaders, this raises three questions worth reflecting on -

1) Partnership over protectionism: Are you building cross-border R&D partnerships or still guarding regional silos? 
2) Value-chain agility: Can your organization operate across multi-hub innovation networks, where data, trials, and talent move seamlessly across continents?
3) AI & proteomics: Do you see them as tools or as the foundation of the next R&D paradigm?
