Big Problems, Little Problems (Children's Book)

Big Problems, Little Problems is the story of how a dad teaches his son to solve the daily challenges of life – and, in turn, the surprising ways in which a child can teach a grown-up to remember what is important, too. Written with lessons that apply to any family with young children, the book is distinctively told from a father’s perspective, and built on how a son and dad listen to and learn from each other. 

This is a tale of how to conquer frustration no matter what the problem. Reviewers have described it as "best book ever for toddlers, dads, moms, and really just about everyone" and a wonderful way to keep from getting "overwhelmed by the many challenges we all face.”

Chief White House correspondent for The Associated Press, a pinnacle position in journalism in which I led presidential coverage for the largest news organization in the world. I spent more than six years working out of the West Wing in reporting on President Barack Obama and President George W. Bush, covering all facets of their domestic, foreign and political agendas. As the chief correspondent, I helped set the tone for the press corps, often asked the first question at news conferences, covered hundreds of topics and was published worldwide.

I was twice honored for excellence in reporting on the presidency. I won the Gerald R. Ford Prize for distinguished reporting—the first AP journalist to receive that honor — for proving to be "both a master of deadline reporting and an astute analyst of the meaning and significance of President Obama’s initiatives and actions.” I won the Merriman Smith Award for deadline coverage of Obama’s tribute to soldiers returning from war in flag-draped caskets.

During my time at the White House, I earned respect across the town as an authoritative voice of reason in Washington. And in overseeing a team of reporters—covering the most frenetic beat in Washington — I was commended for leading “seamlessly…no drama and solid professionalism.”

Regarded as one of the best education reporters in the country in a job of enormous reach within education circles. Led coverage on the No Child Behind Act. Gained  a wealth of knowledge into the politics and policy of education. Covered timely issues including teacher quality, school discipline, class size, budget disputes, testing, special education and higher education.

The Tampa Tribune

Covered breaking news on Florida’s higher education system, writing to engage readers while conveying state and regional perspectives based on research, fact finding and analysis. Produced some of the most significant education stories in the state at the time, including breaking news on the University of South Florida's decision to fire a professor on charges of terrorism after the September 11, 2001 attacks, and the naming of the state's first education czar. My editor's evaluation said: "As a reporter, he has made himself demonstrably the best on his beat in Florida and one of the better in America."
