I keep hearing: “AI is making junior designers obsolete.”
And every time I do, I call bullshit.

Yes — AI can now do tasks that juniors used to cut their teeth on. Background removal, fast iterations, even producing bulk screens. Those “menial” jobs are disappearing.

But to say we don’t need new talent anymore? That’s short-sighted — and dangerous.

Here’s why:

- Seniors keep hitting ceilings. They burn out, move into leadership, or simply don’t want to carry the full weight of execution forever. Some are even fleeing the industry.

- Super ICs are real, but they’re not viable in every organization, they’re expensive and they will hit ceilings too that you might not be able to accommodate as an organization.

- If companies skip investing in juniors, the mid-level disappears. And in 5–10 years, we’ll face a massive gap with no healthy pipeline of talent to fill it.
What’s the alternative? Stop thinking of AI instead of juniors, and start thinking of AI with juniors.

Let them use AI to accelerate the repetitive parts, while spending their time learning judgment, storytelling, strategy, and everything the tools can’t do on their own. That’s how you grow the next generation — and keep the industry sustainable.

Because one thing is certain: replacing juniors with AI might feel efficient today. But it’s a surefire way to break design teams tomorrow.

Showing early-career designers the way | Staff Product Designer at Juro

Have you ever struggled to balance multiple design disciplines — like UX/UI, branding, and illustration — in one portfolio?

It’s not easy. Too much breadth and you risk looking unfocused. Too much narrowing and you hide strengths that could set you apart.

Kate Nikles’ portfolio is a great case study in navigating that tension. An illustrator, animator, brand designer, and UI/UX designer, Kate already shows how to carry a distinct visual voice across very different mediums. Her multidisciplinary background shines through — whether it’s polished brand work, playful game UI, or more traditional product design projects.

At the same time, there’s an opportunity here: sharpening her positioning and storytelling around UX/UI would make her stand out even more for the product design roles she’s targeting.

That balance — honoring your past disciplines while making your current focus crystal clear — is one of the hardest things for multidisciplinary designers. Kate’s portfolio is a reminder that it can be done, and with a bit more clarity, she’ll be in a very strong place.

First time at Hatch Conference in Berlin last week — and I’m seriously blown away.

In just a few days, I…
- heard some of the most inspiring industry talks in a long time given by the likes of Jenny Wen (Anthropic, Ex-Figma), Cameron Worboys (Cash App, Ex-Wise) and Gavin O'Carroll (Skyscanner)

- took part in two insight-packed workshops: Ben Sauer on presenting design work effectively, and Ryan Scott on dealing with data as a designer

- had endless great conversations with folks from the design creator community —
 Thijs Kraan, Ioana Teleanu, Tom Scott, Laura Baker, Darshan Gajara, Mathieu Ritter, Anfisa Bogomolova, and of course the man himself, Damian Martone!

- joined amazing round tables hosted by Tina Iurkova & Stephan Delbos

- rushed to the other end of the city to have a fireside chat with Yashvir C. of Employed.world, sharing the same mission of making the industry more accessible to juniors

- met so many new inspiring people like Angel Grodecka, Håkan Reis and many more

- attended a Framer x Jitter mixer and got to know lovely people from those companies and copped a lot of merch (I'm a sucker for that)

It was a lot — and I’m sure I’m forgetting things. But one thing’s clear: I’ll be back in 2026.

If you get the chance, go. It’s one of the best ways to keep the FOMO low and the inspiration high.

Most early-career portfolios are built with full-time roles in mind. Michelle Irby’s is different — and that’s what makes it worth a look.

Michelle is a Berlin-based designer who’s shaped her site around freelance work. Instead of just listing projects, she’s built a portfolio that doubles as a sales tool: clean presentation, clear services, even pricing tables. For a client browsing, it answers the right questions up front — what do you do, what’s it like to work with you, and how much will it cost me?

That kind of clarity is rare this early in a career. And it works. Michelle’s portfolio speaks directly to the realities of freelancing: clients aren’t designers themselves, and they need to see how your work translates into value for them.

There’s still room to tighten things up — more consistent positioning, and more polish in case study details — but the foundation is strong.

Nothing gives away an early-career portfolio faster than a persona with a quirky name and an overused stock photo.

We’ve all seen it: the same smiling headshot, some invented hobbies, a quote that sounds nothing like something a real person would say.

The problem isn’t that personas are always bad — in companies with tons of real data, they can play a role. I’ve seen a really really good and useful example of personas in my career so far and that company spent over a year crafting them. The problem is that in junior portfolios, they’re almost always made up and add exactly nothing.

Instead of adding credibility, they actually make a case study feel less credible.

What matters far more is showing:
- the context of the problem,
- the user’s real goals,
- and the tasks they were trying to accomplish.

Even better: frame it with Jobs To Be Done (JTBD). It’s a framework that’s actually used in companies, and it ties your design decisions directly to outcomes.

If you’re still leaning on personas in your portfolio, swap them out for context and goals. You’ll make your work feel more grounded, more professional — and a lot less like homework.

The design hiring process hasn’t changed much in the last years (unlike the market itself).

It still feels like a mystery to many juniors I mentor — a maze of recruiter calls, portfolio walkthroughs, whiteboard challenges, and culture interviews. But here’s the thing: once you know the typical flow, it stops being a mystery. You can actually prepare for what’s coming.

That’s the unfair advantage most candidates never take.

Because the truth is: the skills you need to get hired are not the same as the skills you need to do the job. Passing each stage is its own craft.

Balancing strategy, research depth, and polished visuals in a portfolio isn’t easy. Most designers lean too heavily one way or the other.

That’s why I wanted to feature Celeste Seah’s portfolio this week. It shows how analytical, research-driven work can be packaged in a way that feels engaging, polished, and easy to digest.

Her case studies — like Rememo — read like stories. Even a skim gives you the arc of the project. Headings carry the narrative, visuals break up the flow, and animated mockups and scroll-throughs add polish without gimmicks. The result: a portfolio that’s varied, clear, and genuinely enjoyable to read.

For anyone who feels their strength is in strategy or research and worries that won’t “look good enough” in a portfolio — Celeste is proof that you can bring those skills forward and still leave a strong visual impression.

Last week at Hatch Conference in Berlin, I joined Ryan Scott’s Data for Designers workshop — and walked away with a ton of new tools and language for connecting design work to business outcomes.

It hit me again just how much this matters—also for juniors! Visual polish and clever UX are fundamental, but if you can’t show how your work drives results — growth, retention, efficiency — you often won’t get the credit. And in a competitive market, that can be the difference between a portfolio that blends in and one that stands out.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need perfect numbers to do this. Even early in your career, showing the thinking behind how your work connects to outcomes already makes you look more senior. Framing decisions in terms of activation, conversion, retention, or cost savings signals that you understand why design exists in the first place.

That’s exactly what I wrote about in this week’s newsletter: how to bring impact into your portfolio and interviews, even if you don’t yet have hard metrics.
