I love the stage.

I’m not singing these days, but give me a microphone, a room full of people and a clear brief... and I’m home! Conferences, panels, workshops: live is where ideas become action.

Smaranda Heroiu says she doesn’t like the spotlight. She is too modest. On stage, she is a natural: calm, sharp, and generous with her guests. Hosting eCommerce Talks 2025 with her was a pleasure.

Why do I love it? Three reasons. 

First, connection: you can read the room and adjust the message in real-time.

Second, clarity: a stage forces you to simplify until the value is obvious. 

Third, accountability: when you say it in public, you have to deliver. No excuse, no "maybe later".

I don’t actually like the stage.

For me, it’s less about the spotlight and more about giving my brain a workout - the anterior midcingulate cortex, aka the “willpower muscle.”
That little part of the brain is what kicks in when fear says, “stay safe, take the easy route.” Getting on stage is my way of saying, “nope, not today.”

But I do like the people and in the past years, as I became a polymath, getting involved in all sorts of projects, switching hats and roles, sometime being the project nag, running companies, advising, searching for board members amongst some of the brightest and smartest women in Europe and many more - I realized it has become increasingly difficult to define what I do, so the role that is closest to my heart is a connector - because, in the end, people make all the difference. 

Hosting eCommerce Talks last week could have been just another experience, similar to the other hundreds - but the people made it truly remarkable. 

From my partner in crime Florin Grozea, to the driving force behind the event, Ciprian Cazacu and the team who did sweat all the details Alina Cazacu , Ramona Ungureanu, the volunteers and stage producers, the guests, the panelists  - my panelists Tudor Darie, Silvia Ursu, Cristina Cretu and Mircea Capatina - who really engaged in a great (but short) discussion about magic and funding.

And the funny part? To be on that stage, every one of them had to do something they once hated. 😆

My take - focus on people, on conversations, on connecting the dots for the pure joy of it. And that comes from an ambivert, who spends an entire event in backstage because of fear of awkward socializing. 🫠 

Spend at least 20 minutes a day with whatever it is that you hate. It may surprise you.
