Trying to find balance is hard.

Working your a** off for a better future or fully living in the moment?

That’s something that I’ve been struggling with for sure.

Here’s my take for now:

Take the time to create a big goal for yourself, and really define it specifically.

Then break down the goal into yearly/quarterly/monthly/weekly and daily tasks.

Try to execute the tasks WHILE making the BEST out of every day.

And then, most importantly: reflect every now and then if your goal changed and if you’re still on the right track. 

Depending on that answer, either pivot or keep going.

P.S: try to enjoy every part of it, even the hard parts. That’s what gives our life colour - to experience the full palette of emotions. 😁

I’ll be real honest with you:

It has been amazing so far. From masterclasses to new team members, amazing client results and new collaborations. Clients are expanding internationally thanks to our performance and we hit record-days for one of our newest customers.

But…

I’m also struggling, personally. 



👉 Going from freelancer to agency last year has put some weight on my shoulders.

👉 Also, solo-travelling in south-east Asia brings hard times as well.

👉 And training for my first marathon is rough.



But I guess it’s also a good thing.

It’s a quote from Alex Hormozi.

A while back I created a post about a handful of podcasts that I watch/listen to - over and over. 

They spark new thoughts and there are just some formats that work amazingly well for my motivation and creative thinking.

One of them is the Modern Wisdom podcast. 

More specifically: the episodes with Alex Hormozi.

Chris Williamson mentioned last episode that it’s the “podcast booty call”: every 6 months or so Chris calls Alex out of nowhere and invites him over for a 3 hour long deep conversation and then they don’t speak until the next one.

Anyway, back to the quote.

“You have already achieved the goals you said would make you happy.”

About 5 years ago, I had a dream to make a living from my laptop, being able to manage my own schedule and travel places.

Right now, I’m running a marketing agency with global ecommerce clients where we help them scale past 7-figures. And I’m doing that from a beautiful AirBnB in Thailand.

Sometimes life moves so fast that I don’t look around.

But when I do, I feel goddamn lucky to live the life I get to live.

So this is a tip for everyone out there who’s been working towards its goals for a while: look around, enjoy the ride. This is awesome, and this is what it’s all about.

Broad match isn’t your enemy…

Here’s why:

More and more case studies are being published about the fact that broad match works better in some cases.

Within the Amplifize Manager, 4/4 recent experiments showed an improvement in both ROAS and CPA when broad match is used in combination with smart bidding.

We did, however, make sure that Google was steered in the right direction:

We treat our negative keyword lists like they’re the end of all. Honestly, we see a big increase in overall account performance when we use negative keywords lists and update them regularly.

In all cases, we didn’t just went all over board:

We set up designated experiments where we test 50% of budgets towards all-broad and leave the other 50% for the old strategy. This is the way we saw the increase in ROAS and CPA.

Also, these were matured accounts:

In all these accounts we had AT LEAST 30 conversions in the last 30 days, giving the algorithm enough data to steer on.

So, if you have some conversion data, you use smart bidding, you make good use of negative keywords and you are up for an experiment, set one up.

50% towards all-broad.

You won’t regret it!

Shopping vs PMAX: when should you use which campaign type?

Let’s talk about the shopping placement. There’s two major campaign types that enable you to advertise the product placement on the search results page.

1️⃣ Standard Shopping

2️⃣ PMAX Feed Only

So, when do you use which campaign type?

Generally speaking, with a fresh account, you would go with Standard Shopping to get in at least 30 conversions, and then you could think about switching to PMAX Feed Only to fully leverage Google’s AI.

But…

In the last month I set up multiple accounts where PMAX from the bat works better than Std Shopping.

– 

How does this work?

Well, PMAX needs data to work properly. 

But that doesn’t mean that a fresh Google Ads account has 0 data.

Keep in mind that you put the Google Tag on the website during the setup.

That means that, if you have a lot of website visitors, the account gets filled with data, even if you don’t advertise on Google.

Crazy right?

But if you think about it, it does make sense.

– 

So here’s our new rule of thumb:

✅ IF there are a lot of products

✅ IF the website already gets a lot of website visitors (for example a brand that already runs Meta Ads, but doesn’t run Google Ads)

✅ IF the website is optimized for conversions

And 

✅ IF you’re balzy enough to take a wild guess….

You COULD try to run PMAX Feed Only (brand exclude, max conversions) from the bat.

And it might just surprise you.

The agency game is messed up.

But the real reason behind this post might surprise you: 

Flash back 6 months ago, I got in contact with a potential client in the high ticket ecommerce niche. 

They sell €2000+ products.

They were signed with an agency charging them A LOT for running their ads.

When I audited the account, I was SHOCKED.
It looked like a junior was just wildly guessing and setting up campaigns for the sake of it.

Branded/non-branded mixed up, no structure, it seems like the person had no understanding of bidding strategies, locations were set up wrong, and there were like 10 other mistakes which I spotted from the bat, without even opening my audit template file.

Wow.

And the crazy part?

The client HAD to sign for 12 months when working with this agency.

I see this crazy shit happening a lot.

There’s a whole agency-generation that got “trained” by SMMA guru’s

But the crazy thing is…

Those agency owners are performing a better job than the “big” agencies out there.

Because these “big” agencies are actually the worst.



❌ They are the ones with the 12-month contracts

❌ They are the ones who set a junior junior to your account to manage your 10K/month adspent

❌ They are the ones neglecting everything you say

❌ They are the ones that show a lack of communication



The “younger generation of agencies” are lead by people who need to earn their stripes, and they will do everything in their power to keep you as a client.

Not with contracts…

But with results.

The real enemy is the big agency, “giving” your account to a junior marketeer, who just finished their Google Skillshop certification.

If I would own an ecommerce brand, and I’d need someone to manage my ads, I would go to the younger guys. Without a shatter of a doubt.

Maybe I’m biased, but I also know EXACTLY how the clients are being handled by the younger generation.

To give you an example…

Here’s what one of our clients said about us last week:

You don’t have to rely on Amazon for your sales.

For the sake of privacy I won’t disclose any brands or names, but the moral of the story stays the same.

We’re currently helping somebody grow their brand globally.

Let’s call the owner Jack.

Jack has a business in office furniture.

90% of all of Jack’s sales were coming through Amazon.

Amazon charges like 30% of the revenue.

And then you have to run ads because there’s so many sellers on the platform.

And don’t get Jack started about the customer quality there.

Jack wanted to find out if there was another way to acquire customers.

He ran Google Ads himself, with the help of Google Support.

…

You can guess: it wasn’t a success. 

He spent 2K and got 0 (!) sales.

He almost gave up his goals to grow his brand to certain heights, but then he got in contact with us.

And we don’t want to brag about our service, Jack really has a great brand. 

But he was in need of somebody with a deep understanding of Google Ads.

And luckily, our paths crossed.

Not only did we make Jack believe in Google Ads again.

What we do generally when expanding to new countries:

1. Identify market similarities/differences (competitors, pricing, general)

2. Create new strategy based upon that information (structure, keyword research, copy)

3. Do the technical implementation on base of the situation (currency, domain, language)

And after that, the “new level” starts.

Optimization, scaling, growing, new profits, new customers, retention, and everything in between.

GO! GO! GO!

High CPC’s don’t matter.
Less insights don’t matter.
20% less tracking doesn’t matter.

Easy:

Go to your keywords tab and exclude bad performing keywords. 
Go to your locations tab and exclude bad performing locations.
Go to your products tab and exclude bad performing products.

Intermediate:

Install the Flowboost Labelizer script in your Google Ads system (GMC and GADS). This creates an automated way to scale winners and eliminate losers - in terms of products.

Challenging:

Give POAS bidding a try. Go to ProfitMetrics and set up the system. Make sure to include all costs associated with running ads. After that, aim for POAS>1 and scale your account until you can’t.

Here are thousands of ways to get more profit from your Google Ads, but here’s a few:

𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞

Increase AOV on website: use a gamification bar to reward people above a certain order amount. Suggest items when they click the ‘Add To Cart’ button, upsell during checkout.

𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬

Kill bad performing keywords: speaks for itself, but monitor both keywords and search terms. Exclude bad performing keywords if you’re working with a conversion-focussed campaign.

Kill bad performing products: same for products. Don’t bid on products when you’re generating sales at a loss, unless you know exactly what you’re doing (in terms of CLTV, retention, etc., etc.)

𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞

Increase LTV with email: even though I’m a Google Ads Expert, I preach the usage of email marketing. DAMN I’ve seen some great results there. Also: the more a customer becomes worth, the more we can spend on Google, so win-win. (DM me if you’re in need of a good email marketing partner)

𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

Chase visitors who didn’t buy with remarketing: Nowadays some visitors might need a 4th or 5th touch point in order to make their decision, and we’re happy to help them with that. Setup one of these - Display/YouTube/Demand Gen - in all cases opt-out of optimized targeting and JUST target the product page visitors (and attach the feed, obviously).
