The Futures Institute: Shaping Tomorrow Now at Duke University

Lead Instructor and course developer at Duke University's Talent Identification Program course entitled "The Futures Institute: Shaping Tomorrow Now." The course is now a regular part of the TIP Institutes program each summer, covering Strategic Foresight and Futures Thinking theory, methodology, practice, and real-world innovation for solution development.

"Frank developed the curriculum for The Futures Institute: Shaping Tomorrow Now at the Duke University Talent Identification Program, and served as the lead instructor of the course in 2010 and 2011. The course was very popular among students as it utilized a powerful hands-on, interactive and project-based approach to thinking about the future of technology, business, government and society in an intentional and constructive way. Participants leveraged emerging trends and scenarios to “create the future,” building unique products, services, organizational models and social innovations to solve big world problems and seize unseen opportunities. As the Assistant Director of Field Studies and Institutes at Duke University TIP at the time, I can attest to the fact that Frank created an amazing course for our students, and I highly recommend him as an instructor and course developer around futures studies, innovation and strategic prototyping."

Creator and Lead Organizer for TEDxCreativeCoast, Savannah's TEDx conference. Worked with two fantastic teammates on the initial conference (Jennifer Taylor and Leigh Lawless Acevedo) to organize, ensure compliance with TEDx licensing, select TEDx quality presenters, and bring together a group of volunteers to create a successful TEDx event. The conference continues to grow, and TEDxCreativeCoast looks to be an innovation incubator for the city of Savannah for years to come.

𝙏𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚-𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜-𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, 𝙬𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩, 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝙤𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙜𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚.

These approaches have slight differences, but of course we overlap them to make sense of the world, to interpret the signs and symbols around us, to attempt to understand others, to establish "truths" from ancient texts or traditions, to fit communication within our familiar context. And in doing so, we establish parameters, realities, boundaries, "rights and wrongs," ways of knowing that we deem superior to other ways of knowing. We link ourselves to "constants" that have lost their original intent and meaning, and yet we insist those constants have immovable principles that uphold the universe.

• Extract: an attempt to beat the meaning out of something by force or hammer the meaning into something, or to assume that it is speaking directly to us without any filters of time, space, and experience between us and the communication. 
•Generate: to create meaning out of something that is not inherent but is instead a dissociated and/or novel interpretation connected more to our own desires or contexts than to the communication itself.
•Negotiate: an attempt to broker an acceptable meaning or bargain with a context or communication until it fits our cultural, familial, or societal identity and expression of reality.
