- I was part of the design review group of the large InTech organization, contributing to technical designs from any team in the org

- Designed and built a new page template coordinating with 3 partner teams,
integrating in 2 services and managing our own infrastructure.
- Designed and led an iteration with small and CX changes of a 1M daily impressions layout toggle
- Implemented read use case and GDPR compliance for new service supporting high requests/s (20k avg, 45k max)
- Unblocked a project getting wrong business data for 1 month caused by a bug in network retries in another service
- Reduced with an in-memory cache the backend latency of a 1-column mobile layout for hardlines from +2ms to -13ms
- Wrote a postmortem on the importance of finding/asking for clear API specifications of APIs you consume

If I'm not programming, I'm probably reading📚.

If my manager or peers read this post they'll mock me forever.

Yet I'm going to write it.

Identify your bottlenecks and address them.

My recent bottleneck was hardware. 

I had an Intel MacBook that ran out of application memory and 100% CPU recurringly.

I have switched this week to an Apple Silicon Macbook. The difference is huge.

Be wary not to push responsibility to something external. Hardware won't make you a better engineer immediately.

The senior engineers in my team are still working with computers not better than the one I had before and they have more impact than I do.

But hardware can solve a bottleneck that makes you progress a bit faster.

I have ranted about this for the entire week. Sorry for my peers reading me also on LinkedIn about it 😅

Preparing to do the thing isn't doing the thing.

Scheduling time to do the thing isn't doing the thing.

Making a to-do list for the thing isn't doing the thing.

Telling people you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing.

Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn't doing the thing.

Writing a banger tweet about how you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing.

Hating on yourself for not doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on other people who have done the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on the obstacles in the way of doing the thing isn't doing the thing.

Fantasizing about all of the adoration you'll receive once you do the thing isn't doing the thing.

Reading about how to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Reading about how other people did the thing isn't doing the thing. Reading this essay isn't doing the thing.

The only thing that is doing the thing is doing the thing.

- I want to have traveled the world, not to plan trips.

- I want to have mastered a musical instrument, not to spend hours practicing.

Our brain is always looking for the outcome. 

However, we have to evaluate the process to understand if it's worth the effort.

Always keep your cool at work.

If you think about the work you were doing 1 year ago, it won't seem as important as it was back then.

No matter how important something seems at the moment, it's not.

People won't remember what you said in that moment.

But they will remember how you made them feel

Always ask: what's the minimum needed here?

It's not about doing the bare minimum.

It's about prioritizing

Operational Excellence brings value to the customer.

Period.

Many people would argue that your fancy dashboards and alerting system are not providing users with any functionality.

But they are what makes an outage last 10 minutes instead of 3 hours.

That's value to the customer.

The problem is that you only see it asking "What could have gone wrong but didn't?"

It's hard to quantify something that didn't happen.

The only way is through.

Whatever you ignore will just appear in front of you later in your career. 

It's fine to be smart about what problems are not worth solving.

But when it's about people skills, you need to overcome your barriers.

There's no way to ignore people for the rest of your life.

There are things that happen and you can't control.

Acknowledge, accept, reassess.

Remember that your first opinion on a topic doesn't have to be the right one.

No matter how many productivity systems you have, there's one underlying truth.

The more things you have in your plate, the more "admin" work you'll have.

Meetings, emails, adhoc conversations in the office, slack messages...

This is how it works:

You have 10 tasks to do in a month, you can:

1. Open the 10 of them on day 1 and work the entire month on them in parallel.

2. Start with the first thing, limit your open tasks, only pick the next one after you close another.

The real work of the 10 tasks is the same.

But the overhead of doing them is smaller when you don't have many at the same time.
