Yesterday, Stripe made a major announcement, signalling a shift towards a more inclusive ecosystem for payments. It’s a shift that Primer has been driving for some time, and our model is the catalyst for it.

Since day one Primer has always been about optionality. Giving freedom and flexibility to our merchants and empowering them to choose the products and services they need in order to create unique commerce experiences, expand to new markets, optimize performance, and leverage payments for growth.

For far too long, processors have given merchants an all-or-nothing scenario - use them but use all their products. But operating globally is not a one-size-fits-all approach. In fact, processing one payment end to end requires several different services throughout the transaction lifecycle. Imagine this at scale and the operational chaos that comes with it.

The reality is that this has been an issue for decades. And the DIY approach to managing several services across the payments stack adds more pressure on engineering and product resources, technical debt, data reconciliation, the list goes on. These things come at the cost of the user. So, I’m pleased to see that Stripe have joined us on the path to creating a more inclusive ecosystem.

During my days at PayPal, I saw the exact same siloed problem, and it’s the reason we decided to start Primer. Today, we’re serving enterprise merchants worldwide who are now transforming payments, getting the redundancy, performance, and cost efficiency they need from their payment infrastructure.

The walled gardens are crumbling. The garden is now open, and the ecosystem can thrive.
