I am delighted to continue putting my knowledge and skills to work fighting cancer at Helix BioPharma! I obtained my PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology, where I defined the stoichiometry of murine and human γδ T cell antigen receptors. I returned to Canada to join Dr. Armand Keating’s translational laboratory at the Princess Margaret Hospital (Toronto, Canada) where I developed a bioluminescent xenograft mouse model of Philadelphia-chromosome-positive (Ph+) leukemia to test γδ T cell immunotherapy. I also discovered that γδ T cell subsets differentially target Ph+ and B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias. In the laboratory of Dr. Paula Foster at Robarts Research Institute (London, ON, Canada), I devised a procedure to expand primary human γδ T cells for labeling with iron-oxide nanoparticles and tracking in preclinical cancer models via MRI, confirming their anti-cancer functions against prostate and brain cancer cells. I then joined the laboratory of Dr. Lynne-Marie Postovit to study how the breast tumour microenvironment impacts γδ T cell function. With my former PhD student, Indrani Dutta, I explored tumour escape mechanisms employed by breast cancer stem-like cells and how to enhance γδ T cell targeting of this rare yet critical population. I also began investigating the potential of γδ T cells to target ovarian cancers. I have been privileged to give invited talks on my research to lay and scientific audiences at national and international meetings in Canada, the United States and Germany.
