Gamiel has a unique passion for helping drive corporate innovation and grow Mayfield’s early-stage portfolio. He runs the business development function for Mayfield and focuses specifically on accelerating product-market fit and early customer adoption for Mayfield’s investments.

He and his team have built a global network of CXOs, called the Mayfield Innovation Network, made up of CIOs, CTOs, CISOs and business leaders from across all industries, who need access to new ideas to compete in their own markets. This is a highly engaged global network whose members join CXO Insight forums, CXO of the Future Podcasts, and provide CXO Priorities in formal reports.

Gamiel brings more than 25 years of operational and venture capital experience to the Mayfield team. He previously served as Chief Strategy Officer for SOASTA (acquired by Akamai) and was responsible for ongoing operational improvements in sales, marketing, channels, plus strategic partnerships, corporate development, and investment support. Gamiel was also a partner at Sierra Ventures, responsible for leading the Sierra CIO Summit attended by over 150 Global CIOs for eight years. He has also held executive leadership roles at IBM, Oracle, BEA (acquired by Oracle), Appcelerator (acquired by Axway), and Cassatt (acquired by CA).

Gamiel is a California native, father of 3, and husband of more than 30 years. He loves to give back as a volunteer, with a focus on education. He is currently leading an effort as chair of the Career Services Advisory Council at Cal Poly.

Recently, I was back in Saudi Arabia, and every time I visit, I’m struck by how rapidly the region is evolving—especially when it comes to AI.

Last week marked the 9th edition of the Future Investment Initiative (FII9), often called the “Davos of the Middle East.” Under the leadership of Richard Attias, FII continues to convene some of the world’s most forward-thinking voices to discuss how technology, capital, and collaboration can drive real-world impact.

One of the most compelling takeaways from their new Compass Report is its optimism about AI. In the Global South, 71% of citizens say AI has had a positive impact on their everyday life—a reminder that progress isn’t just measured in innovation labs, but in how technology improves daily realities around the world.

FII itself plays a unique global role: a nonprofit focused on one powerful mission—Impact on Humanity—turning ideas into action across AI and robotics, education, healthcare, and sustainability. It was great to get to be part of this event, and I'm already looking forward to next year.

Headlines about AI and job loss grab attention, but they rarely tell the full story. The World Economic Forum predicts 92 million jobs will be displaced by AI by 2030, but 170 million new ones will be created. That's a net gain of 78 million.

Most people say the world has gotten more “VUCA” — volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous — and that strategy today must bend to chaos.

I don’t buy it.

Reading Roger Martin’s latest piece, I was struck by how the actual shifts in strategy aren’t about volatility at all. They’re about structure — the rise of fixed costs over variable ones, and the speed of price/value discovery.

These two forces have made competition more deterministic. Winners win faster and bigger; mediocrity has less room to hide.

For leaders, that means clarity and conviction matter more than ever:

> Compete on transparency, not excuses.

The old playbook of “experiment everywhere” isn't cutting it anymore. You have to choose where to play and how to win with precision, then back those bets decisively.
