General Motors India Limited

GMIL is a fully owned subsidiary of GM and located near Vadodara, India. The cars manufactured are Opel Astra (sourced from Germany) and Opel Corsa (sourced from Brazil). Localization was to the tune of 40% of the value. The vehicle and spare parts distribution was from the plant. Service provider was Emery Worldwide.

Major Responsibilities:
Ensuring parts availability to the dealers. Minimum of 93% first fill for stock orders and 99% for VOR.
Manage Service Providers for warehouse management, transportation etc.
Stock orders to be fulfilled within 8 days anywhere in India and VOR orders within 24 hours.
Increase sales of parts to increase the revenue for the company.
Ensure right configuration of car is available for most of dealer orders.
Inventory control for parts and FG stock of cars.
Implement and maintain SAP in distribution.
Look for alternate sources for parts procurement within GM family for cost reduction and strive for reduction of total cost of ownership to end customers.
Initially, shifting of the warehouse from Mumbai to Vadodara.


Selected Key Achievements:
Increased the sale from US$ 5mn to US$ 8mn in 2 years.
Overall First Pick increased from 88% to 94%. J D Power rated GMIL as Number one in service timing in 1999, which is directly proportional to spare parts availability.
Implemented SAP R/3 for Parts distribution.
Shifted the parts warehouse from Mumbai to Vadodara thereby saving US$ 200K per annum in structural costs. Downtime was 4 days only.
Reduced the prices of 55 top maintenance parts basket by 17% followed by a campaign on spare parts prices comparison with competition.
Part of the regional after-sales team that formulated the vision for APac for GM and SPOI.

National Distribution Manager

Stumpp, Schuele and Somappa Limited

manufacturing springs and Ignition capacitors. All the major OEMs procure springs from SSSL, which had collaborated with Stumpp &amp; Schuele, German company. 

Major Responsibilities:
Regional sales responsibility - OEM and Aftermarket.
Receivables management is critical as the biggest issue is working capital as the raw materials are imported against LC.
Forecasting customer requirements, Supply decisions, Batch quantity analysis, size-wise procurement planning etc. Also market development for capacitors - OEM and Aftermarket.

Selected Key Achievements:
Increased the sales from US$ 9mn per annum to US$ 12mn per annum when the growth rate of the auto industry was negative. 
Awarded the Best Vendor from Maruti Suzuki Ltd in the hardware category defeating Sundaram Fasteners Ltd, an international auto component giant.

Regional Manager - North

Maruti Udyog Limited

MUL is a joint venture between Suzuki, Japan and Government of India for manufacturing passenger cars. The plant is in Gurgaon, India. MUL is the market leader for cars in India with over 70% of the market share. 

Major Responsibilities:
Vendor development for proprietary items of engine like carburetors, pistons, pumps, bearings, power transmission belts etc. Timely availability of parts as per the car production schedule. 
Inventory management and annual Price negotiations with vendors. Localization of parts.
Leader of the implementation team from user side for Oracle Application. 

Key Achievements:
Devised a foolproof method for inventory management of selective-fit items to ensure continuous availability.
Development of pistons, piston rings, carburetors for Zen and Alto.
Backorder items from engine group for spare parts reduced to zero.
Localization of high value items like Carburetor, Pistons, Piston Rings handled successfully.
Price negotiations for all engine items to meet the department objectives.

Miscellaneous Projects Handled:
Developed a ten-year plan for development of world-class accelerated test facility for tractors and components in Eicher Goodearth Limited.
Solved 5-year old problem of gearbox noise in tractors by component search technique in EGL.
Handled the Current Engineering function for clutch and transmission components of Heavy Commercial Vehicles in Ashok Leyland Limited (JV between Hindujas and IVECO)
