Gaurav is a quintessential small-town fellow who, after working and living in the USA, returned to Varanasi, where he grew up, with a dream to create a globally recognized start-up in Varanasi. He started his career as a software engineer with a top Indian IT company, where he received the best employee ratings for three consecutive years, and worked on various projects for Microsoft. Later, he worked in the technology teams of RBC Capital Markets, New York, USA. In 2013, Gaurav returned to India and started working in his first start-up in Chennai. The start-up aimed to improve the employability of students, from economically weaker families, studying at Tier 2/3 engineering colleges. The start-up was successful to find a model for upskilling students. A few students who were trained in the program are working in major companies in India and abroad. However, he closed this start-up after two years, failing to find a sustainable revenue model. In 2015, he returned to Varanasi to start his next start-up, a platform for young artists, especially visual arts students, from Tier 2/3 cities in India, helping them become artist entrepreneurs. The platform sells artworks by young artists online, organizes exhibitions, and teaches art marketing and Indian folk art forms through its online courses available on Udemy. In 2017, he started working with Govt Primary schools to improve educational outcomes through visual arts, which now is a separate not-for-profit company. This organization is currently working with 20 Govt Primary Schools in Varanasi, improving these schools and providing self-sustenance opportunities to visual arts professionals. In 2019, Gaurav started a small retail outlet in his village in Kaimur, Bihar, employing ~8 people from his village, those who were working earlier as manual laborers. Gaurav is a self-learner and a regular reader. He has completed 20+ courses in MOOCs. He started two book clubs earlier and currently runs a page on Facebook recommending books and authors. He passionately follows the Manchester United football club.
