It’s one thing to name a trend right now that will happen in 2026. That’s easy. Those get tons of likes and reshares.

It’s another to predict a trend ten years before it happens.

Back in 2015 I talked heavily about analog and its revenge (along with the revenge of the humanities). Even devoted a whole chapter of it in the cult classic.

Nobody listened. Until now.

Postdigital examples (especially lofi ones) are all around us because posting in digital ecosystems seems to be decaying. It no longer is seen. It no longer seems to work. It’s all noise surrounded by more noise. As we’ve seen recently a lot of the accounts are fake.

All of this leads to a return to things many of us who got our start in the 1990s understand. Stenciling. Visual physical design. Sticker slaps. Sniping. Limited edition Flyers. The goal? In person connection using tech as it was intended to be used. Not as something to make you an addict. But to truly empower you as a human with other humans.

Artists always lead. Business copies them all the time while never wanting to admit it. Follow artists if you want to see what behaviors happen next.

All predictions mine some time back in the summer of 2015.

Social models for the rest of this decade are morphing into three that will require media teams to figure out where best to invest time and energy:

1. The Big Social Archaic Automated Model. Based on the newsfeed and designed with one thing in mind, how to serve up a buffet of data and content that helps ads perform best. A remix of cable TV but instead of channel surfing the boob tube you just doomscroll all day. Everything is automated including the content. These are the ones that are being abandoned quickly now following the fact they’re time wasters and aren’t human driven at all. All programmatic.

2. Substack Meet Only Fans. It’s interesting but a lot of content creators don’t want to use AI to make things and don’t want to learn how to edit or produce videos. They like to write and if they make video they want to just hit the “Go Live” button and speak to the audience they’ve built. No post editing software required. This is a more human driven model. Sure, automated ads may exist but that’s not the point of their existence. The point is the people on them. Sort of a throwback to the original spirit of the web ruined by massive corporations carving it up and building model number one.

3. To Be Determined. This model is for those of us who don’t subscribe that there will only be two models and there could be room for others that are mashups that are focused on a variety of features. There could be a MySpace like throwback with emphasis on connecting to people based on what music they like or a Meetup model where you can only connect with people if you have their phone number and met them in real life. Or a ownership models where when you join a network you become an equity owner by the value you add to it. This would throw public markets into disarray. Disrupting the disruptors.

One thing is certain, anybody who isn’t skeptical about the future isn’t thinking hard enough over the fact we just don’t know what the future has in store when we forecast predictions. As you read this and other predictions for 2026 keep an open mind that anything is possible and nothing is certain.

Six years ago I diagnosed what skills we would need to navigate this decade of the 21st Century. The poll research was conducted with 1,000 Linkedain professionals in various business verticals. Has this list held up? What would you add or subtract?
