GOOSEBUMPS! That moment of revelation – when you debrief a client on customer research. You can see their face light up, They realise the possibilities. That's what makes me tick. Career-wise, I've gone the long way round... I trained as a designer. Chanced it as a copywriter. getting my first agency job when Margaret Thatcher was still PM. Later I dabbled as a creative director. Research and data have always followed me around. Back in my agency days, I'd praise research if it supported my thinking, or trash the process if it challenged my approach. As I got more experienced, I learned from academics, colleagues and YouTube. I taught myself research methods and frameworks like Design Thinking and Behavioural Economics. These days I've learned that research is just new knowledge – how you act on it is the exciting bit. An average day might be: – testing prototypes & apps with customers – evaluating existing product positioning – debriefing client teams who're building new products I write and talk about research under my moniker, The Audience Detective. I'm a Visiting Tutor at The Arts University Bournemouth, and Bournemouth University.
