I am performing quantitative research and data analysis, as part of the Global Integrated Assessment Modelling team of E3Mlab. More specifically, my duties are the following:

• Develop energy systems modelling software and tools, by using GAMS, R and Python.
• Collect, structure and analyze datasets that are relevant to the energy and transport sectors.
• Summarize scientific, technical and market reports, and create input for quantitative assessments.
• Contribute to the scientific research papers published by the Global IAM team of E3Mlab.

E3MLab is a research laboratory operating within the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens (ICCS - NTUA). The laboratory specializes in the field of energy systems analysis, by developing large scale mathematical models that cover the areas of Energy, Economy and the Environment (E3M). Furthermore, those models are heavily utilized by the European Commission to shape important climate policy initiatives, such as the European Green Deal. In addition, E3Mlab models are regularly used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment reports.

Today around 19:00 UTC, a total solar eclipse will take place, being visible in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Apart from the impressive spectacle, solar eclipses have provided valuable insights to scientific research. A century ago, the british astronomer Arthur Eddington was able to gather empirical evidence for the General Theory of Relativity, which had been introduced a few years earlier by Albert Einstein. Eddington took advantage of the total solar eclipse occurring during that time, to verify whether General Relativity predictions were accurate.

According to Eddington's observations, light coming from distant stars deviated from its course, due to the spacetime curvature caused by the Sun. This was a triumph for Einstein, who became an iconic figure of the 20th century, leaving his timeless mark on Physics. Furthermore, this event was monumental for scientific progress, as the limits of classical mechanics established by Newton several centuries before, were surpassed. The combination of scientific theory and experimental validation, fundamentally changed our perception about the universe!

"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." This timeless quote by Aristotle, encapsulates the essence of a fascinating phenomenon, that is known as emergence in Systems Science. Emergence is defined as follows: the interactions between a system's parts may result to unpredictable new behavior, that can't be observed on individual entities. In the video below, we can see the movement of a flock of birds (murmuration), commonly used as an example of emergence. Notably, swarm behavior has been modeled mathematically, having many practical applications. There are countless emergent phenomena, from Biology and Physics, to Economics and human societies, making complex systems an important research area. The cause of emergence remains unexplained, but it appears to be a fundamental property of our universe!

Kurt Gödel was a logician and philosopher, widely recognized for his important contributions to mathematical logic and the foundations of mathematics, during the 20th century. Gödel's most significant achievements include his incompleteness theorems, which demonstrated the inherent limitations of formal systems capable of basic arithmetic. In addition, Gödel's contributions extended beyond those theorems, impacting various areas of logic and mathematics, hence establishing him as one of the most significant logicians in history. Furthermore, Gödel was a scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study of Princeton, alongside prominent scientists, including Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and John von Neumann.

Formal systems are mathematical frameworks that can be used to infere theorems, based on a set of axiomatic truths. Gödel's incompleteness theorems revealed inherent limitations within such systems, indicating that any formal system capable of arithmetic, contains true statements that are impossible to prove. Specifically, the first incompleteness theorem states that in a formal system, there exist true propositions that can't be proven based on the axioms of this system. His second theorem expanded this idea, by indicating that such systems cannot demonstrate their own consistency. Those discoveries had radical implications, as they affected not only mathematics but also computer science and other scientific disciplines. Furthermore, Gödel's work had another profound effect, practically establishing an insurmountable limit to human knowledge!

Today is Earth Day, an annual event aiming to raise awareness about environmental protection, in dozens of countries across the globe. The current environmental crisis is mostly caused by climate change and biodiversity loss, while also having other aspects. Unfortunately, the rapid economic development of the industrial age and onward, resulted in the significant degradation of the natural environment. Hence, the great challenge of our time is to improve the standard of living for humanity, without undermining the planet.

Sustainable development is a commonly used term, without always being accompanied by the appropriate measures to accomplish it. Personally, I have the honor to participate in research projects such as DIAMOND, NDC ASPECTS and IAM COMPACT, which aim to study and formulate effective climate policies, by utilizing integrated assessment models. Moreover, the energy transition is an ambitious goal, that can be achieved by implementing the correct policies. In the photo below, we can see Earth from space, as it was captured by the Apollo 17 crew. By contemplating this image, we may appreciate our planet more deeply, and learn to cherish it as we should!
