With this companion app, SuperScout users can very easily take photos anywhere on-the-go and upload them directly into their account. 

From there, locations will be tagged and organized automatically. 
They will also have a history of exactly when & where a place was scouted.
And they will easily see all the notes they took on the Scout In one place.

Empowering filmmakers with radically better software; co-founder at SuperScout

Managing time as a founder dad is tough... Time to try a new trick. 

A few years ago I remember connecting with Dan Murray-Serter 🧠 as he was early in his journey building Heights. I was reaching out to him for startup advice and I remember him agreeing to a call but only if it was while he was out for a walk, to give his baby daughter some fresh air. 

One thing that stuck with me was how he was attempting to be highly structured with his time, given his new role as dad. He was only taking non-essential calls (ie helping earlier stage founders like me) while he was out for a walk with his daughter, because his deep focus time was precious and essential and it could not be ruined by unnecessary calls. 

That strict rule of his has always stuck with me, and now, as a new dad, I am constantly fighting with the lack of hours in a day to focus on essential SuperScout work. 

So, as of today, I'm starting to try this method. Timing with a baby is massively irregular, which makes it hard to plan meetings. But if Dan managed it, so can I :)

It's interesting seeing different people's reactions to a baby in a call. 

Now my wife has gone back to work, we are both working full time jobs, and sharing the full time workload of parent. 

We're fortunate that we both have unusual jobs that can be very flexible. She's a musician. My company is 100% remote. But it's still quite the balance to explore. 

When she's working, I have to take him, which means he appears on calls with me. I've started building a tally. 

He's now 11 weeks old. 
He's shown up in about 70% of my calls. Either for a couple mins, or in some cases for the whole call: 

⏲️ # of times the call has been shortened significantly due to a fussy baby, but we still achieved what we needed to do: 2

😡 # of times someone has been visibly annoyed he's involved: 1

😭 # of times I've had to reschedule a call due to him crying: 1 (she was super understanding) 

😇 # of times he's been specifically requested to join the call: 1 Gillian Milner :)

😍 # of times the other people in the call have lit up / smiled because he joined: too many to count. 

I was worried that people might judge me or take me less seriously if I had him on calls, but I've been grateful that there's been no discernible difference. At the end of the day, we're building game changing software for our industry. 

That's what matters to our potential customers - nothing else, and that's very good to see!

I just submitted an app for review to the iOS app store, for the first time ever. 

I've been involved in other apps in the past, but this is the first I've been in charge of submission. 

Wanted to shout about this from the rooftops, but I can't reach my roof, so this'll have to do!

Fingers crossed the iOS app gods aren't too unhappy with us.

Unrelated, Rochester Institute of Technology must have embedded itself deep in my subconscious. I picked this outfit out for myself yesterday and only realised I was wearing RIT colours halfway through the day.

Investor updates are such a useful, yet often ignored part of startup life.

I started writing them before I even had investors thanks to Founder Institute. But now, with almost 400 investors, they help me keep everyone involved in the journey. They're essential for 2 reasons:

1. It helps me look back on the previous month, and have a hard look at what has gone well, what hasn't, and what we can improve.
2. It gives investors/supporters a good way of following along the journey & feel the momentum.

Through the years I've iterated and found a template that works for me.

Today I was reminded that I'd shared it publicly last year, because Andy Cairns told the Rare Founders group that his template was inspired by mine (thanks Andy 😀). So I thought I'd share it again, in case it's helpful to anyone else.

My template and style are not for everyone: I like to write, so my emails are lengthy. But that's ok: that's my style and it works for me.

My template consists of a few key elements:
👋 Before the email starts, a reminder of who/what this email is about. This hasn't changed in a year.
😃 A quick intro, using their name.
❓ Asks! If you want your recipients to help with something, put that at the top.
💸 Revenue: Whether you have none, a little, or a lot, it's good to be completely honest on how much money people are paying for your product.
🏆 Wins: Any wins we want to shout about.

Now just this is enough for some investor updates. But again, I like to write. So at the top of every email I tell people all key information is above the first image. After wins, I break the email up with an image.

After that image I take the time to fill out with longer form content, which is less structured (and varies in length, with multiple images breaking it up). I tend to write in this section about:
- User insights
- Features (new and upcoming)
- Predictions
- Fails

And finally, I sign off with a few things:
- A testimonial from a client
- Thank yous and welcomes to new investors
- A cute photo (most commonly of Macadamia (pictured below))

I use the free sending tool Cabal to format & send my updates. 
I try to send this in the first half of each month, but sometimes life gets in the way. 
Importantly, I don’t beat myself up if I miss that target. That can often lead to a downward spiral, where nothing gets sent. 


Take from this what you want. As I said, I like to write. This is not for everyone.

#1 Our security didn't like the login attempt & they needed a code from us :) Good problem to have

#2 We hadn't been explicit enough in our permission requests.

So much value here. Though I would add that from interviews I know my target users don't check those launchpads. (So not for everyone)I got my tech in front of more than 100 early users by cold messaging them with 1 line sharing our value in a connection request, asking for a chat. And if they accepted, a 2 min demo of our tech. 

Everything else I agree with (and will try to get better at implementing)

How to get your first 100 users if you’re not a marketing genius: 

The “distribution is the king” crowd is mostly the founders who built an average product, failed & blame distribution.

Ofc, you need an initial boost to get eyes on your product. The first 100 users.

Here is how to get them in a way that you don’t have to be a marketing genius:

1. Launch on all launchpads

2. Introduce your product in social media every day until it goes viral.

See other viral product launch posts, copy their templates. Do it 100 days in a row and one day you’ll go viral (if you copy the viral templates).

Here is the prompt for grok:
“here is the viral product launch template and below the info about MY actual product. PLEASE create a launch post for me by using the viral template. Make sure you follow the viral template language style and tone of the voice.

Viral template:...

My product info:...”

3. List your product on all relevant directories.

Do it manually, find a competitor, find the directories they’re are listed on by watching their their backlinks, make a list, submit to each (or save yourself time by letting listingbott.com do it for you).

4. Run an AI SEO agent that generates articles for you every day on autopilot ( e.g. seobotai.com ) or build those articles yourself using grok deep research and post them manually one by one (50 articles is a good start). Also make sure to grow your domain rating to at least 15.

5. Paid ads. 
You can try using X, google or fb ads if you know how and you have time for it.

If you don’t have time, use tinyadz.com (it’ll do the whole thing for you, starting at $19/mo).

6. Cold DMs and cold replies on social media
- find relevant people and relevant posts 
- DM/reply with your product
- Keep the pitch super short, ideally one sentence
- don’t spam, be relevant
- Try different pitches, to see which one converts
- cold email outreach is ok too

Have you ever used AI to figure out a corner radius? 

Doubt it. it's such a niche problem/solution.

and yet so useful. I'd only ever used corner radiuses in the digital world, in UI designs until this last weekend. 

Then being the tinkerer that I am, I decided to install some new light switches which required an extender away from the wall.  

I could have bought them but where's the fun in that? I decided to 3D print them. 

but to make sure the print matched the light switch cover, I needed corner radiuses. measuring those by hand is possible but a pain. 

instead I pointed ChatGPTs camera at it and gave it one length. the AI gave me an exact measurement of corner radius in seconds and I was off to the races.
