At Vivere l'Italiano, I helped to get the language school online via the use of social media. I created and maintained their Instagram and LinkedIn pages, and aided in the improvement of their Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest sites. On the marketing side, I designed both their posters and flyers to be distributed near the school, helping to increase the exposure of the company throughout London.

Asking for what you want shouldn’t make you feel like a bitch. But for so many women, it does.

We’ve been taught that being assertive means being bossy, difficult, or demanding when in reality, it’s how you get what you deserve.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much my mindset has shifted since I started seeing assertiveness as something good rather than something to apologise for. 

Turns out, that shift has a name: cognitive appraisal. It’s about reframing the way you see something like turning nerves about public speaking into excitement to share what you know.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how uncomfortable it can feel for women in business to ask for what we want.

Because somewhere along the way, we were taught that being likeable matters more than being honest. That politeness is safer than clarity. That it’s better to keep the peace than to risk being seen as “too much.”

And that conditioning doesn’t just disappear when you grow up it follows you into meetings, salary negotiations, client calls, and all the small “quick favours” you say yes to when you really mean no.

But asking for what you need isn’t rude it’s respect. It’s how you build trust, not just with others, but with yourself.

In this week’s pod episode, I wanted to unpack why it’s so hard to advocate for ourselves at work, what the psychology says about it, and how we can start to change it. I also spoke to the brilliant Terri Cole, who shared such valuable insight on what healthy assertiveness looks like in practice.

When people hear “personal brand,” they often think of influencers or entrepreneurs, but honestly, I feel like in recent years we've all realised that it's something everyone should be thinking about, no matter whether you're running your own thing or not.

I heard someone say the other day that your personal brand is what tells the world who you are before you’ve even entered the room and I couldn't agree more.

Because we all already have a personal brand. It’s what your colleagues say about you when you’re not in the meeting, what comes up when someone googles you, the question isn’t whether you have one, it’s whether you’re in control of it!! 

I've had a few questions recently about how i've managed to build my personal brand online, so I've been working for the last few months on The Personal Branding Method. It's basically a practical framework for defining, refining, and actually leveraging your personal brand with intention, not luck.

This episode genuinely blew me away. 

Olamide Olowe is the founder of Topicals (the fastest growing skincare brand in Sephora) AND the youngest Black woman ever to raise $10 million in venture capital. By 26, she’d raised $15 million, and basically rewritten the rulebook on how you build a culturally iconic brand in beauty (up against the biggest players in the industry).

I've admired Olamide from afar for years, and as soon as I saw her announcement that she was acquiring the cult haircare brand Bread I was simultaneously like 'I like the way she moves' and 'we need her on the podcast NOW'. 

To use an overused metaphor, I think so many of us in our 20s are told the glass ceiling is just “how things are” and then you meet someone like Olamide who shows that the glass ceiling isn’t fixed: it can be broken, redefined, and rebuilt on your own terms!! 

We spoke about:
- Raising $15M before 26 (and what it was really like behind the scenes)
- How to build brands that truly shift culture and become a touch point 
- Her advice for anyone who wants to break into business but feels the odds are stacked against them

Kate Halfpenny started making wedding dresses for friends and family as a side hustle whilst she was a celebrity stylist, and transformed that side hustle into one of the world's most iconic bridal brands.

I'll be honest I went into the bridal process with absolutely no idea what I was doing and feeling like I wasn't really a 'wedding dress person', so I wanted to make this episode an episode for any brides-to-be who feel similar, I asked Kate all the questions I wish I'd asked earlier when I was searching for 'the one', like:

- The biggest misconception most brides have when they're shopping
- When you should actually start searching for your dress
- Why shopping with all your friends & family isn't always the best idea

Designer at Halfpenny London

If you want strong campaign messaging and you're not creating a messaging house, I hate to tell you but I think you're making a mistake. 

What is a messaging house you ask? 

It's where you define all of the messaging that you’re going to be using in your launch campaign, which can then be pulled from to use across every channel and platform, outlining your USPs, key features and benefits, and the problems you’re solving for your customer (emphasis on problem solving!). 

Across the businesses, I use my template to formulate the basis of every single piece of copy, from socials to marketing material to your website. 

I always say that repetition should be a lot less worrying than consistency when it comes to copy because you get bored of your copy, way before your customer does. 

The best thing about this is that once this is confirmed, you and your team can all pull from this so all platforms are cohesive and sharing the same message!!

The magic of a messaging house

Sabrina Dhowre Elba is an entrepreneur, UN Goodwill Ambassador, and co-founder of S’ABLE Labs with her husband Idris Elba. What I love most about her story is how honest she is about changing her mind. She had her whole career mapped out, was meant to go into law, and then realised it didn’t feel right anymore.

And instead of forcing it, she changed direction. Which sounds simple, but when you’ve built your whole identity around a plan, it’s one of the hardest things to do.
