I have co-founded Tethered with my wife Karen. The Scottish Wellness & Community App for mindfulness, relaxation and simply a place to belong.

My role at Tethered is the technology, digital strategy, partnerships and business operations, all of which play to my career strengths over the past 20 years.

Africa Scotland Business Network

I am delighted to have been asked to be a founding Scottish board member of the Africa Scotland Business Network (ASBN), with whom I have been a member for a long time. ASBN is a fully independent membership network of highly skilled business people and companies. While predominantly Scottish and African in focus, they welcome businesses from across the world who have a genuine interest in connecting with companies in our network.

I spent some of my childhood in Kenya and have had an affinity with Africa ever since. So when an opportunity arose to help ASBN and their founder Claire Alexander to set-up a board in Scotland I was delighted to help.

I will be helping to represent ASBN in Scotland with a particular focus on my 20+ years experience in digital and technology.

I am a Digital Non-Executive Director, Advisor and Consultant. I specialise in working with both established and start-up businesses who identify the important role that digital plays and need some help/support to ensure their business unlocks its digital potential. I am based in Scotland however I work with clients globally and have experience in international markets.

The work I do is both challenging and rewarding: working with owners and/or board of directors who have a particular challenge or just know that digital is something they should do better but don't have the expertise to steer the business in the right direction.

I have founded and grown a successful business, been Head of Digital in a £4.7bn turnover FTSE250 Plc, Head of Marketing in a fast growing digital focussed international tour operator, and delivered a range of projects for clients, so i’m well placed to help large businesses and businesses aiming to scale succeed. 

'Digital' is quite a loose term so below are some practical examples of how i've helped clients:

- INTERNATIONAL E-LEARNING BUSINESS - Worked with the founder and CEO initially to identify areas of opportunity and potential globally. Then worked with them to spec and build (using 3rd party developers) a new technology that enables them to unlock new revenue streams using web technology to maximise their peer to peer online learning community.
- SAAS BUSINESS - based in Singapore, I work with the founder/CEO to help sense check strategy and technology projects
- DIGITAL AGENCY - NED role working with the two founding directors to help them strategise and provide support during sustained, fast growth
- TOP 5 ACCOUNTING FIRM - working with them to sense check and identify areas of opportunity in their digital marketing strategies and internal digital resourcing
- VEHICLE LEASING BUSINESS - working with the board on web technology strategy and putting in place the best solution for the business to facilitate high growth

There are too many throw away, cheaply made "Scottish" products produced abroad that don't properly represent Scotland nor do they support the industry here. We want consumers to question where products are made and where possible buy from genuine Scottish manufacturers, supporting the industry and safeguarding their heritage and traditional practises whilst purchasing something genuine that they can treasure.

Our goal is to use our digital and branding experience to bring the audience to these makers. To share the love of Scotland with anyone, anywhere who feels an affinity to our country. To genuinely experience a bit of Scotland.

Macs Adventure

Macs Adventure is an international tour operator with offices in the UK, US and Germany. I was appointed as Head of Marketing, sitting within the Leadership Team and reporting to the CEO, with responsibility for all global marketing activity and website projects across all 3 markets. The business achieved double digit year on year with the marketing function being a vital element of that growth. I managed a sizeable marketing budget, a team which grew from 3 to 7 and delivery of multiple projects including the delivery of 3 large scale website projects, on time and on budget, which resulted in huge conversion improvement.

Lookers plc

I joined Lookers PLC to take on full responsibility for digital marketing and all website platforms for the business at a group level, managing a multi million pound P&L. This involved building a digital strategy from scratch and migrating all digital activity in-house, hiring and managing a large team to handle all activity across the group. This was highly successful with considerable YoY performance growth coupled with substantial cost savings.

Managed the planning, strategy, tender process, development, migration and continued performance improvement of 5 enterprise level websites for the group, including multi-brand e-commerce and customer portal functionality.

Lookers plc is the 2nd largest automotive retailer and distributor in the UK with over 160 locations across the U.K. and Ireland with a turnover in excess of £5bn. Lookers is comprised of three motor divisions: Lookers in England and Wales, Taggarts in Scotland and Charles Hurst in Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland with the additional of an agricultural division Platts Harris.
