Drive

As a Senior Creative for Drive Productions, I have played creative director on a world's first for HP's Connected Music campaign featuring Bastille where I conceived and executed the creative solution/strategy. 

I built the narrative and scene looks for the world's largest projection mapping show at the Circle of Light in Moscow in 2015. I was creative director for the UK Welcomes Modi visual content in 2015. I designed the event space/user experience for the very successful Land Securities foodie event Nova Foodie. I've been integral in the creative behind SapientNitro's iEX 2013 (www.iex2013.com) which Drive Productions proudly produced, as well as the launch of the UK Deezer campaign seeing my concept for The Deezer Bandwagon developed into a fully engaging live brand experience which was covered by BBC news and Sky news. 

I've also facilitated the success of the EE 4G launch in the UK, the Emeralds & Ivy Ball 2012, Channel 4's SU2C, Airbus Smarter Skies campaign in Berlin and a Dove Product Launch in Paris to name but a few. 

I was the Creative Producer behind the hugely successful 4D TV stage design on X Factor for the hit song Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth feat. Emeli Sande. I've worked on projects like The Ralph Lauren 4D Experience at Kadewe (Berlin). I was a key contributor to the narrative of the epic G20 Summit Opening Ceremony as well as being responsible for the pre-visualisations of the many scenes.

I'm responsible for providing creative solutions to briefs and building the presentations for pitch. We specialise in visionary event experiences using the latest 3D projection mapping technology. Our other areas of expertise lie in film and motion graphics, brand experiences and showmanship.

How important is product presentation?

For me it’s crucial! Brands can’t lean on the power of a product anymore. It’s the world that it exists within that drives the allure of what the product stands for. Give the product context and dramatise its utility to exoeritial design.

Adidas Originals presents a stunning installation in Taikoo Li, Chengdu, China. More than 35 jackets from the adicolour series are displayed in a dazzling sample of colours and styles. Mounted on scaffolding, these jackets offer an impressive visual spectacle that does not go unnoticed.

In collaboration with ABAXRRR, Adidas Originals has reinvented the classic concept of adicolour, merging retro styles with modern tones to create a visual statement that captivates the imagination. This gigantic installation, which marks the first stop of the adicolour activation in the country, stands out with a variety of colours and retro styles.

Do brands need to take an art-led approach to the way they show up in retail?

Retail spaces are quickly taking on the guise of spaces you’d notably find in some of the leading art galleries. 

Let’s face it, art has always pulled in the crowds so why has it taken this long for brands to catch up? People want a feast for the eyes and a narrative that they can get lost in. We’re thankfully seeing more and more of this today and thus why we’re seeing the implosion of luxury e-commerce with the demise of businesses like Matches. 

Humans have an innate inbuilt desire to explore which brands can leverage by building worlds not spaces and use art as the catalyst to tell immersive brand stories.

Below was brought to my attention by Shop Drop Daily and this is what it had to say about Fendi’s retail activation below: Experience the timeless artistry of Fendi's heritage leatherworking technique, passed down to the Fendi family in 1925 and still meticulously executed by hand today, showcased at an interactive pop-up spanning from the Tuscan hills to Tokyo.

How to WOW!

I love Swarovski’s significant shift in creative direction this year. 
 
I’ve been talking about ways to improve the way brands show up for over two years now from retail design to popups and Swarovski has nailed it with its concept store named Instant Wonder, a high-colour, full-immersion boutique which its new creative director Giovanna Engelbert refers to as a Willy Wonka candy store of crystal escapism.

This vibrant direction permeates everything you see Swarovski doing from retail design to popups to visual language across all communication channels. It’s a triumph in my view and one other brands can learn from. 

Takeouts:

🖍️Colour blocking: The brand has mastered the art of colour blocking as well as the palette it champions. 

🎨 Bright is my favourite colour: The brand’s new direction serves up a feast for the eyes. Colour is a great way to engage curiosity in your audience. Stimulate their innate desire to explore and you can’t go wrong. 

💎 Tactile temptation: Texturise your space to provide a sense of depth and dimension. It gives people more to notice and encourages guests to enjoy the details of the world they’re in. 

🔶 Brand confidence: People can tell when a brand cuts corners and it denotes cheap. Brand confidence is infectious when it’s done right but it needs the right investment. If not you’ll get caught out and your reputation will suffer as a consequence. 

💠 What's your WOW? When designing a space genuinely ask yourself where your WOW elements are. Be honest with yourselves. What will people genuinely talk about and tell their friends about. Design from the ground up with this in mind and qualify your output through this metric.

Should #brands be creating pop-ups that have a legacy?

So many brands create something that comes and goes within a matter of days. What if the popup could somehow become a permanent installation that benefitted the community way after the event.

Below: With the help of Nike, Stephane Ashpool of the French streetwear label Pigalle collaborated with the creative agency ILL STUDIO to transform a modest basketball court in Paris into a work of art.

Surely tattoos aren’t just for the skin?

As part of my #Thinkink artwork at Studio Grant Harvey I’ve started to explore applications. 

It’s early days but I’m glad to say I’ve recieved my first commission to tattoo a pair of #adidas trainers for the amazing Nete Svane (a glimpse into what they look like is featured below) which are part of my Shoe Tattoo collection.

I’m bridging the gap between art and fashion which began with an Adidas cap and it’s important to stay connected to the vision so I’ve let my imagination run wild and explored everything from a Studio Grant Harvey #Ferrari to a #yacht.

I’m posting daily on Instagram at Studio Grant Harvey and regularly showing some behind the scenes content of my work in progress. Feel free to say hi on that platform too.

What does the future of AI look like?

Here’s a few things I predict happening:

We’ll be able to see ourselves star in our favourite films if we get that self-obsessed which I feel, given our current society, will happen.

We’ll be able to change the ending of films to comply with our liking.

We’ll be able to effectively create our own films and then share that on a Tiktok type social platform for AI driven self—made films. These will be rated and ultimately ranked as the most recommended AI films to watch which will screen at Netflix AI cinemas. (Yes IRL cinema experiences will still be a thing.)

We’ll have a 3D avatar that will digitally perpetuate our existence so we’ll digitally never die. This digital version of ourselves will be our ultimate legacy and will mean that with the evolution of AR lenses future generations will be able to get to know their ancestors as though they still exist in the physical world. 

This is a glimpse into where I personally see the future going. I’m free for Meta to hire me as its Chief Futurist if it wants.

Acrylic Fusion with Craig Black 

I recently gave a talk in Edinburgh on the future of brand experience and thought I’d pay one of my favourite artists a visit whilst I was in Scotland. 

So I travelled a little across the gorgeous terrain to visit the one and only Craig Black. The man is crushing it from collabs with Porsche, Redbull, FIFA and many more, he’s making awesome progress. 

He’s known for his Acrylic Fusion work and I had the great pleasure of diving into his creative process for a short spell whilst in his studio.

Here’s a glimpse into the fun we had.

If you don’t know him already then check him out! Not only is he a great artist he’s an awesome human being. A combination I’d like to see more of in the art world.
