My life forever changed in May 2021 when I lived out my dream of traveling the world. I had joined a new company earlier that year as an electrical engineer designing large-scale wind and solar farms with the agreement that after 6 months working from home or the office, I would be able to start working remotely from around the world. For those 6 months, and the first few months of nomading, I put all my energy into becoming a top remote worker. This culminated when I was able to work 5 months almost fully asynchronously while living in Asia in one of the most conservative industries towards remote work. Around this time I started asking myself a new question: “What’s next?” Early on in my engineering career I knew it wasn’t my forever job. I liked it, and it allowed me to do what I loved on the side, but I always felt like something was missing. The problem was, I never knew what would be next for me. That was until I heard about this new position popping up in early 2022 called: “Head of Remote.” After hearing more about the role, I felt like I found my calling. I spent the next 2 years upskilling myself, seeking mentors in the remote work space, experimenting with flexible work practices with my engineering team, starting an internal committee at the company focused on optimizing for remote work, to finally pitching my vision of this new position at our company. In April 2024 I started in my new role as Flexible Work and Engagement Partner. Now, I’m focused on empowering our team members to live life on their terms via #engineeredflexibility. I’m more aligned than I ever have been with my job, and I’m intent on becoming a future of work thought-leader paving the way for others in traditional industries like I’m in.
