The Prince's Trust

I am a volunteer mentor for the Prince's Trust. The Trust, a charity in the United Kingdom founded in 1976 by Charles, Prince of Wales, supports vulnerable young people from 11 to 30-year-olds, to build their confidence, find a job or start a business.

The impact of the pandemic has disproportionately fallen on young people, in the UK under 25s account for three in five jobs lost, and youth unemployment is due to climb further still, even as the economy recovers. 

My role as a volunteer business mentor is to help young people who want to start a business and have already completed the Trust’s Enterprise Training Programme which covers the essentials of starting and running a business from creating a business plan and cash flow to how to sell and market the business. The programme is available to all young people 18-30 in the UK.
Mentoring programmes can last from 6 months to 2 years. 

Some of the young entrepreurs I have worked with include a fashion photographer, a ceramics designer, an autistic public speaker and coach, a poet, a job coach, a personal branding photographer, an inclusive wellness advocate.

Business Mentor

Front of Mind Coaching

I mentor small business owners to help them develop their business. I work with both established businesses and  start ups.

I am a qualified management coach and have set up and run several successful niche businesses. My first business was a mobile fruit and veg round which taught me the importance of quality, customer service and consistency. Subsequently I have had two telemarketing businesses, a software reseller business and finally a LinkedIn training business.

Most of my work is online, typically this would involve a monthly mentoring session with follow up conversations/emails between sessions as required.

Small Business Mentor

NB: I am not currently running public courses.

I am an independent LinkedIn trainer providing practical hands-on public courses in the South West of England and bespoke and online course throughout the UK and internationally.

For a B2B business LinkedIn is your gateway to unlimited opportunities. It provides ungated access to 95% of your target audience. In my experience, however, most businesses are using LinkedIn without a clear sense of direction or overall plan. Individual skill levels and usage varies enormously so the consequence is patchy results at best.  

The good news is that this situation can be turned round quickly and inexpensively. A small amount of time investing in mastering LinkedIn will pay big dividends, as in this example:

LinkedIn Locals began as a worldwide movement which started in Australia and spread to more than 360 cities worldwide. All events were not for profit events where local LinkedIn members could meet and connect with other local professionals in a  networking environment where the focus is on building relationships not pitching for business. 

In April 2019 LinkedIn took control of the LinkedIn Local brand and declared that anyone could host one subject to certain restrictions. The requirement that events should be non-promotional and not-for-profit was dropped. 

THE BRISTOL EVENT CONTINUES TO BE NON-PROMOTIONAL AND NOT FOR PROFIT.

Optel was a reseller of sales and marketing software and as such was in the first wave of "CRM" although it was not called "CRM". We sold a package called SaleMaker later re-badged as MarketForce as a sales automation, telemarketing and customer service solution. It was used by many leading companies including Lotus, Intel, and Bass Brewers. The product was based on a Btrieve engine and could search over 1 million records in less than a second and that was in 1987 some products can't do that today!

PAST AND PRESENT

My career has been about helping businesses of all sizes to find, get and keep customers. I have had two direct marketing businesses, and a software company. After selling my marketing business in 2011 I then spent eleven very enjoyable years teaching small and mid-size businesses how to use LinkedIn effectively.

Today I am 99% retired. I do occasional 121 LinkedIn coaching to get people started but I do not actively look for work.

I am however very active mentoring young people through the Prince’s Trust who are starting their own businesses in the Southwest. I find this both challenging and very rewarding. THE FUTURE

We are living through a climate emergency. This is not business as usual. However busy we are we can all do something to protect future generations. Lobby politicians local and national to take more urgent action. Join or donate to an environmental or climate action group. Champion genuinely green policies in your business.
