I am an online facilitator, trainer, experience designer, and someone who's spent thousands of hours on Zoom. Literally! For the last 15+ years, I have trained thousands of program leaders on how to design and deliver valuable group sessions in person. Then COVID hit. Like the rest of the world, I had no choice but to teach and train over Zoom. At first, I was a skeptic. I didn't believe you could do the same kind of meaningful work online as you could in person. Early in the pandemic, I led my first online session. It was far from perfect. But it was in that session when I saw group members participating and connecting that I realized that you can do meaningful group work online. And I realized that the key to unlocking engagement is to design and facilitate sessions specifically for the way we interact virtually. With more people learning, working, and collaborating online, virtual group sessions have become the norm. But it can be a struggle to build deeper connection, get everyone's voice heard, and break the boredom of too many Zoom calls.
