Charged with setting the strategy for public relations at Buffer and being a spokesperson for Buffer's culture and product to the media and public. Through my work, Buffer's culture and product are consistently featured in prominent news outlets, including the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Business Insider, Forbes, and TechCrunch. 

Created two of Buffer's biggest annual studies: the State of Remote Work and Buffer's transparent equal pay analysis.

My work was focused on consistently landing Buffer impactful media mentions by developing key contacts at top-tier publications, working with our product and people teams to release company news, and advancing data studies to place strong messages aligned with Buffer's brand and vision.

Myke Hurley, co-founder of the independent podcasting network Relay FM, has mentored our podcast since 2020. We have listeners in over 60 countries and have reached #1 on the Careers chart on Apple Podcast in Iceland, although over 50% of our listeners are in the United States.

Focused on using social media and press mentions to generate positive brand awareness. Working at a fast-growing startup, I wore multiple hats. In addition to helping with press, I headed up event planning for launching in new markets, ran email marketing campaigns, coordinated speaking engagements for the executive team, and assisted as a local marketing manager as needed. 

• Developed and implemented a public relations strategy for upcoming announcements, campaigns, and launches, helping to secure press in local markets and coordinate key messaging and interviews.
• Planned and executed launch events in Portland, Oakland, D.C., and Chicago. Securing the attendance of over 1,000 community members in Chicago and 2,000 in Washington, D.C.
• Developed and implemented an organic social media strategy to engage all active markets using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

Communications Coordinator

• Working on a freelance and contract basis with individuals and agencies to develop and execute communications and content strategies across various media to tell their story and help meet their goals.
• Generated French media coverage for a client of InMedia's, a public relations agency, in major media in Quebec, including La Presse, Les Affaires, and CBC Radio Canada — all key outlets for their client.
• Gained media coverage of a local activist's election to a global organization as their new ambassador, most successfully landing a TV interview on CTV Morning News. 
• Increased website traffic by 50% in four months for Big Like, a marketing agency, through content marketing and syndication. Succeeded in having multiple posts I wrote for the Big Like blog appear on Social Media Today, linking back to the original piece and generating earned traffic to their blog.

• Built public relations efforts from the ground up through daily research and outreach to reporters of interest and gathering key information in a database for regular pitching.
• Implemented a consistent cadence of public relations outreach and coverage, resulting in notable press coverage in the Financial Times, StartupNorth, StartupWeekendBlog, NotableCA, TechVibes, Next Montreal, Under30CEO, Maple Butter, AppChamp, Metro Ottawa, and the Ottawa Business Journal — all key outlets for the company's customers and business relationships.
• Charged with regularly writing press releases, pitch emails, and drafting guest posts to gain media coverage. Collaborated with other local startups in joint press efforts on local, national, and international coverage.

Growing up, after quickly realizing that becoming an astronaut was not for me, I always wanted to be a writer. Storytelling was in my nature — I came up with stories with my siblings and spent weekends drafting future books.

That childhood passion evolved into my defining professional skill: transforming complex ideas into clear, approachable stories that resonate with people. 

My approach centers on simplifying the complicated. Whether building content teams from the ground up or developing brand marketing strategies, I focus on creating sustainable outcomes that grow over time — just like a good story builds chapter by chapter.

Though my younger self might balk that my stories these days aren't about superheroes and princesses, I find meaning in helping others shortcut the learning curve in their own journey through my writing on career growth, self-improvement, social media, and marketing.

My writing has appeared in Fast Company, Time Magazine, Entrepreneur, and Built In, and I've spoken at events including Facebook's Communities Summit, Fast Company's Innovation Festival, and several events for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

A recent addition to our hiring process at Buffer is a paid collaboration day, here's what that looks like: 

• We ask final candidates to work with us for a day. For that day, candidates are added to our tools and work directly with their potential team.  
• The goal is to assess their collaboration style in our unique work environment.
• There's a project for the day and the candidate is sent the project information a bit in advance. 
• If the collaboration day goes well, the next step is the final interview. 

This working style of interview is so valuable (on both sides). We get to experience how a candidate communicates, collaborates, and problem solves alongside their potential future team, and the candidate gets to see the same for our team. 

Confirming all of this feels pretty essential on small and high-trust teams like we have at Buffer. 

When I trialed Collaboration Day a few months ago (and hired the amazing Sabreen Haziq afterwards), it was the first time we'd added this step to our interview process. 

Now, we've done several more Collaboration Days and are even extending to a longer Collaboration Period (two days) for roles where that additional time feels essential.

Throwback to Buffer's content team meeting in person for the first time 🤩

Remote work gives me freedom and flexibility I wouldn't trade for anything.

Still, to me, the best remote collaboration happens when you've built genuine connections with your teammates. 

Before April of this year, we'd never met up in person (for various reasons).

Now that we have, we'll be even faster to connect, collaborate, and create — because the foundation feels that much stronger.

Remote work thrives on trust, and nothing builds trust like sharing stories, laughs, and a little bit of everyday life outside the screen.

Something I did a lot early in my career was volunteer in roles that gave me experience I wanted to be paid for.

I wanted to work in social media marketing, but there weren't a ton of roles for that in 2013.

So I got creative about building experience:
🌱 I offered to take on the social accounts for the clothing store where I worked (they agreed!)
🌱 I joined a student organization and managed their social media
🌱 I did social media for the jiu jitsu gym where I trained in exchange for classes 

Each role built on the last one. Until eventually, I had so much experience that I could get a paying job in a related field.

Now I work at Buffer, so all of this social media experience very much worked out. 

All that to say, if you're trying to break into a specific career, there are opportunities you can create for yourself.

Volunteering is one approach, but you can also:
→ Build your own projects
→ Offer to help local businesses
→ Create content that showcases your skills
→ Take on projects within your current role

If you want your social strategy to work harder for you, it pays to look at the data. Here are four takeaways from Buffer's 2025 LinkedIn research worth trying this week:

1️⃣ Weekday mornings are prime posting time 
Tuesdays through Thursdays around 10 to 11 am drive the strongest engagement for most accounts. That said, check your own analytics to spot when your audience is most active.

2️⃣ Carousels dominate format performance
PDF carousels earn 278% more engagement than video, 303% more than images, and nearly 600% more than text-only posts. Their swipeable format makes them ideal for depth, saves, and shares.

3️⃣ Posting frequency compounds results
Moving from 1 post a week to 2 to 5 delivers a noticeable lift (+1,182 impressions per post, +0.23% engagement rate). Posting 6 to 10 times pushes gains even further, and 11+ posts weekly triples engagements per post. Pick the amount that is sustainable to you and aligned with your LinkedIn goals. 

Important to remember for your social media strategy: The average engagement rate on LinkedIn is 6.5% — higher than any other major platform. Well worth the investment  in the platform.

This is what I do: 
- Go through my sent posts in Buffer
And then either: 
- Add posts that still feel timely back to my queue 
- Or, iterate on other ideas if I want to change how I framed it 

Bonus: Sometimes I get inspired by something I wrote in the past and end up writing new content. 

♻️ The best part of this system is the more you do this the better it becomes and you can keep repurposing and evolving your ideas.
