𝐓𝐨𝐩 5 𝐦𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝:

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #1. Canadians are not eligible to work in New York.

You do NOT have to be a US citizen or have graduated from a US law school in order to apply to work in New York. You simply need to have graduated from a "ABA equivalent" degree program in Canada (which most law schools satisfy the requirements for) and pass the New York Bar Examination process.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #2.  You have to be a law student at the University of Toronto or a JD/MBA students to land a job in New York.

This is false. Last year alone, students from Queen's, Western and Ottawa landed roles at top-tier New York firms with students from Lincoln Alexander School of Law reaching final round interviews as well. Some of the best performers at top law firms come from lesser known schools.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #3: You have to be in the top 10% of your class to land a job.

New York firms appreciate candidates with strong grades, and this metric alone is one of the biggest determinants in your ability to get a greater number of interviews. HOWEVER...

If you have strong work experience, good grades (above the B-curve) and a strong networking strategy, even a B+ candidate can land a job. You will need to emphasize culture fit, and ace the interview but grades are not the only thing firms look for.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #4: You don't have a chance of landing a corporate law job in New York if you have a public sector background.

New York firms hire students into private practice corporate transactional work or litigation. Firms want to see a clear, demonstrated track record of interest in these areas. Public sector backgrounds in securities law, financial policy or economics can work in your favour, to that end. 

If your public sector background was closer to human rights or public international law that may be less helpful. BUT, if you make a clear break with your past by rebranding yourself in law school, taking courses primarily in corporate law, pursuing a combined JD/MBA and working for a corporate firm during your 1L summer, these can all be indications you have made the transition towards corporate law, without having to explain your past as anything more than diversified work experience.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #5: You need connections in New York big law to get in.

Absolutely not. While knowing people in New York big law can help with networking, the process is largely meritocratic. If you have a strong cover letter, resume, grades and have proactively reached out to connect with people at your firms of interest, you have a strong chance of landing an interview.
