**Trigger Warning. This post may be difficult to read**

Today is the day I break my silence. On this day two years ago my former husband tried to kill me. 

I almost lost my life at the hands of my abusive ex husband. 

For fifteen years, I didn’t tell one person. Not my siblings, parents or even my therapist. 

Why? Because the intense manipulation of an abuser made me worry about the repercussions of sharing what was happening within my home. 

In the past two years, I have done intensive therapy, participated in numerous support groups and most importantly learned to love and forgive myself. 

Today, I stand before you as a woman that is more emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually stronger than I have been in decades. 

People tell me I am reverse aging and I am. 

I attribute it to dealing with my trauma. Not running away from it or running to another person to cover up the pain has been the key to my healing. 

I am safe. I am loved. I am peaceful. 

I am a woman that went through the pit of hell and climbed out by strengthening her faith. 

My relationship with God is stronger than it’s ever been. 

Without my unshakable faith, I would not be the healthy whole version of myself that I am today. 

Today, I not only break my silence for me. 

A few weeks ago my friend called me and told me she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. 

If I would not have shared so openly with my friends and family about the abuse I endured, she wouldn’t have known that she could lean on me. 

In just two years I have helped hundreds of women overcome the devastation of mental, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse. 

My hope and prayer is that a woman that reads this post knows she is not alone. 

You no longer have to suffer in silence. 

God loves you and so do I. 

Today may not be the day you are ready to break your silence, but when you are send me a message.

Why did I take the Talent Acquisition Aspireship if I'm applying for SaaS Sales Account Executive roles?

Six reasons:
 
1) the Sales approach I practice preaches knowing your buyer's world
 
As a jobseeker, my "buyers" = companies
 
Though the primary decision makers tend to be Sales leaders,
 
recruiters or TA professionals are often gatekeepers.
 
Caring to know *both* of their worlds
 
is analogous to seeking to understand the reality of both BTL & ATL buyers
 
 
2) It's an investment in the future
 
Some startups I've interviewed at haven't had a recruiter
 
Once I was interviewed by a first-time leader who had never before interviewed anyone
 
Once by an AE, SE, & Marketing
 
=people whose plates were already full with their primary function, yet here they were 
 
tldr - it's not off the table that I'll be asked to participate in a recruiting process even as an individual contributor AE
 
Skill-building now will serve me later
 
Helps be better prepared to adapt to the needs of what's going on internally
 
=One more tool in my belt, proactively placed
 
Since there's reason to believe I might need it at a time when there's not time a ton of time to learn it
 

3) Started this course (& Software Engineering) *while* I was taking the SaaS Sales cert - partly for strategic variety
 
If I wasn't mentally up for one, I made progress on the others
 
Sometimes you need a "total break" 
 
but other times an "active break" (accomplished by switching things up a little) is enough to refresh your brain cells
 

4) I've been starting to take certifications corresponding to industries my "Tier A [job] accounts" sell into
 
Job searching after my layoff in a tough market,
 
a number of no's I got at first had to do with a lack of specific industry experience
 
So I started taking industry courses
 
So far I've taken courses on: 
Marketing Attribution, TA, OT Networks, & Software Engineering (in process)
 
Didn't end up landing those roles,
 
but now I know more about those industries & personas than most sellers who have never sold to them. 💡 
 
I have a long game view
 
This effort, extra investment of time, care, & detail-orientedness will pay dividends not too long from now.
 
But even if it never does, it's what aligns with my work ethic & integrity. So I would do it again.


5) It's never bad to be literate - even at a high level - in a range of dissimilar worlds.

Range, in fact, is one of my special strengths. A value add to any employer I work for

Recently in a sauna, a conversation with a stranger, at first about dance, shifted to us discovering we're both Sales people

Expanding your "surface area of relationship building potential" results in establishing more diverse, deeper relationships, faster. 🤝 

12min in the sauna turned into a new LI connection
 
 
6) Having range is a catalyst to multithreading Sales processes
 
since it equips you to connect with folks in dissimilar roles across an org.
 
Useful. Especially upmarket.

Context:

I went to an event last October and wore a "free sales role-plays" sign

And Robbie Law recorded the one I did with him. 😨 

the catch: I would sell his service, something I'd never sold before.

This was in a loud busy event center, where I'd have to speak extra loud to have any conversation.

I only got a minute-ish of context on what Robbie does.

And when I figured out that the camera was recording, not taking photos, I was terrified.

It couldn't have been any more on-the-spot (nor I, more nervous).

But I'm glad I did it.

The purpose of the sign was three-fold:

1. Exercise/stretch my sales and cold calling skills
2. Demonstrate my skills and go-getterness to land my next and future roles 
3. a talking piece to drive real conversations at the event. 

Volume Warning: there's a lot of background noise, so don't start off on Max volume.

I got HUNDREDS of happy birthday DMs today on LinkedIn, but only one really stood out. 


Those hundreds of DMs made my LinkedIn inbox look a lot like my email inbox. 

Line after line of the same message over and over that elicited a “thanks” and not much more from me. 

Hania sent me the message that stood out.

Why did it stand out in the sea of messages? 

1) it was a voice note 
2) she sang me the Polish happy birthday song
3) she referenced my family 

We know all the messages were relevant (to a degree) since it’s my birthday, but Hania nailed pattern interruption and personalization. 

The voice note interrupted my scrolling and piqued my curiosity. 

The singing spoke to me because I’m a musician. 

Referencing my family went a long way because they’re the most important part of my life. 

How can you apply this to your outbound prospecting this week? 

Stand out, be relevant, show your prospect you know them.

I faked phone calls all the time in college to prevent myself from losing one of my mother tongues.
Let me back up -
 
 
People talk a lot about how to learn languages 
 
but there's far out less there about *how not to /lose/ a language you've managed to learn* 💡
 
I grew up bilingual.
 
Spoke English at home but we were largely based in Poland
 
As a result, 
 
In BOTH languages I sound like I've never left the US/Poland
 
…and this, despite the fact that my parents aren't bilingual to the same degree. 
 
When we relocated bases back to the U.S. soon before I went off to college, 
 
it was my first time having SIX YEARS of really no place to use my Polish

Three years in, I visited Poland for the first time since we had left and realized I need to practice pretzeling my mouth into its sounds if I'm going to keep sounding like a native speaker. 👀 

Also realized consciously for the first time ever that 
 
English is spoken opening your mouth wider, more horizontally 👄 
 
Polish is very narrow & vertical 👖 
 
Before, it had just been automatic. 

Now it took effort. But it made all the difference! 💡


I started speaking out loud to myself - knowing from my Choir, Acting, learning, & language background 

that speaking & reading out loud will preserve my Polish better than if I keep it in my head 
 
And, out of care for folks in my environment,
 
if I happened to be in public, 

I faked phone calls. 
 
to get practice speaking out loud without disconcerting people haha

(slash freaking people out that some woman is muttering to herself in enthusiastic gibberish 😆) 
 
Soon I was back to sounding like I had before

A decade later, I am proud to look back and see not only did I retain both of my mother tongues at their native level,

I also significantly improved my German (thank you, Fulbright)

and - something I never expected - learned two new languages (thank you, LatAm)

of which my 4th is a lot stronger than my 5th 


…and you better believe I speak them all out loud to myself. 💪

My favorite air travel hack as a neurodivergent individual?
 
Put in earplugs before I leave the house & leave them in till my final destination. 💀
 
Honestly the best thing ever. 
 
Airports are loud.
Planes are loud. 
Putting yourself in endless noise for hours on hours is needlessly overstimulating.
 
Personally, I rather save my brain's bandwidth & headspace for more productive things.
 
Especially since air travel is taxing enough for other less controllable reasons.

✅ Note 1: Earplugs lower the decibels that reach your ears, not cancel all noise

I can still generally hear through them enough to be able to have conversations as needed 

with plane neighbors (I make friends lol), check-in desk, etc. 

If not, I pop one out.
 
✅ Note 2: It doesn't take having adhd for noise to take a toll
 
(The toll stimuli take is just more pronounced in folks like me.)
 
Case in point, I once read that part of why so many people think airplane food
"tastes awful" is science-related:
 
Background noise even affects how we perceive the taste of food.

More importantly though, it subconsciously & gradually exhausts us.
  

So I honor my mental energy 
 
by trying not to give it away to freeloaders like "sustained elevated background noise" 🙅‍♀️ 
  

 
Noise cancelling headphones or earbuds are a solution too, 
 
but the battery life is usually short
 
+ then you have to worry about not losing the little suckers when you're trying to sleep, change planes efficiently, etc.

Most gimmicky tourist thing I've ever "fallen for"? 
 
 
Well,
 
I once lived in a village once for some 6 weeks
 
Total population: 5000
 
Thought it would be a good idea because-- nature! 
 
Turned out to be a mediocre idea for that immense amount of time because-- isolation & no dance training or great replacement options! 🤦‍♀️ 
 
It's funny the bright ideas we sometimes have.
 
So anyway, in this town that shall remain unnamed, they had tours to go "see Pablo Escobar's house"
 
Escobar, being a drug lord, isn't some giant role model of mine 
 
Nor did I know more about his story than that he was a drug lord
 
And I usually skip the tourist stuff 
 
but I had gotten to know the people running the boat tours so I joined along one day
 
"to see Pablo Escobar's house"
 
Turned out en route that *technically* there's no tours of the house allowed. 
 
(Which is why there's regular tours, but you just need to pay the guard to let us in…)
 
After paying the guard who had ridden up to us on a motorcycle with a toddler when we hopped out of our boat
 
we get there & it's just ruins of a not-so-old, ruined-due-to-neglect house.
 
(Just googled it - he died at age 44 in the 1993, which explains the not-old house)
 
Apparently they had turned Pablo's house into a paintball place, and that had since closed, so now it was just a run-down carcass of a house 
 
including that the sauna in the basement was unrecognizable as a sauna. 
 
I thought it was kind of cool that he had a sauna in his house
 
Until the guide's opening sentence was, "This was one of Pablo's 200+ houses. It's believed he was even here personally once or twice…"
 
I closed my eyes & laughed.
 
Okay so I was on a tour of one of TWO HUNDRED house-corpses that belonged to someone who - oh - hadn't ever really been there.
 
At least the boat ride part of the tour was nice

And the colors and lighting were lovely that day
 
because dang, we're gullible. 
 
I had figured they had made it into a museum. Nope. 🙃 
 
Learned more about the gullibility of foreign tourists that day & effective marketing than I did about Pablo Escobar
 
because besides "200 houses" & "didn't actually live here" we really didn't learn about the man. 
 
Could have survived without seeing an abandon house with an organized [apparently guerilla] tour group, but hey
 
'least we got a few pretty pictures 
 
If I can't be learning, I might as well make Art. :)
 
Moral: 
Try your best 
but at the end of the day, 
accept failures as the data points & funny moments of randomness that they are.
 
+ be creative always
 
Ya can't win them all.

Wrote this reflection 3yrs ago. Today it's a reminder of a difficult season I'm grateful isn't & wasn't forever: 
 
"/ MOBILITY MUSINGS 
 
I miss laundry smelling familiar.
 
When you relocate homes frequently, your clean laundry smells a little different in each next place you wash it. 
 
Sometimes a lot different. 
 
So much so that sometimes I find a random clothing article that was last washed a home base or two ago [because I didn't happen to need it since], 
 
or pull out something that's been in a box for a while, 
 
and it *still* smells of that specific location-or-two-ago's clean laundry. 
 
I recognize where the item had been washed, and I'm mentally flung through time and space to that place. 
 
I know what my laundry smelled like there, and I know this was last washed there. 
 
Just sniffed the collar of the blue shirt I have on. 
 
I think, because I could smell something that my mind didn't recognize. And my beyond-tired brain thought, "Who does this belong to??" 
 
Because how could it be mine if it doesn't smell mine? I glanced down to double-check. 
 
Of course what I had on was a piece of my own clothing.
 
I'm tired.
 
And moving to Colombia in an hour. 
 
Here's to not knowing how I'll smell next, 
and to knowing it won't always be this way."

It strikes me that these extended job search seasons 
 
that *so many of us* are in right now 
 
feel a lot like "not recognizing the smell of your own clothing".
 
Disorienting. Disheartening. Ungrounding. Hard. 
 
I see you. You're not alone. Rest, but don't give up.
 
It will not always be this way. ❤️🙏

It's Saturday again.
 
 
 
I glanced down at the street from the stairwell window on my way out
 
It stopped me in my tracks
 
What I was looking at did
 
Mounds of veggies heaped on tarps
 
A Saturday vegetable market had popped up
 
Visited by women in sarees. Motorbikes
 
I lingered, processing
 
The colors
 
The fact that this is normal
 
Just as other things are a normal on Saturdays elsewhere
 
2015 
 
was one of the best masterclasses I ever took
 
on the fact that diversity is a fact whether I choose to educate myself on it or not.


It's Saturday again.
 
What ordinary thing are you looking at today?

I have many systems in place to help create routine, consistency, and ultimately effectiveness in my life. Here's one: 
 
*Leveraging sound*👂
 
I play the birds in the morning + the train tracks at night
 
In times I was more mobile, this helped me have a sense of continuity & anchoring no matter where I was
 
Hearing familiar sounds helped ground and prepare me - to welcome & come down from the day
 
It's wildly important to have systems in place to help yourself succeed 🙌
