⚓️ Investment style: Patient, go-anywhere, non-benchmarked with a value and special situations bent, aiming to generate attractive positive real returns over the medium-to-long term, whilst keeping portfolio-wide drawdowns to an acceptable level.

The spectacular bull run in gold, silver — and many other commodities — has surely attracted a fair number of “tourists” and newcomers to the sector lately.

But many are now learning the hard way that volatility is baked into this space.

And that’s before you even get to the mining stocks themselves.

Which have significant operational leverage to underlying commodities, and are sometimes financially leveraged on top.

(And which received a proper beating on Friday.)

This is, and always has been, a volatile corner of the market.

Not a one-way street.

Do I expect that to change?

Nope.

But does it mean I’ll take my eyes off the prize?

Right now, markets are obsessed with growth, tech and anything AI 🤖 related.

The S&P 500's top performers are all in that camp 🏕️.

While solid, steady sectors like healthcare 💊 and consumer staples 🥤are being left in the dust.

They've been lagging behind growth names for years, and the gap is now at historic levels. 

Sounds familiar? It should — the last time this happened was the dotcom bubble…and we all know how that ended.

No, this isn't about trying to time the market (that's a fool's game). 

But it is about seeing where long-term opportunity is quietly piling up. 

If you’re investing for the next market phase, you might want to look where others aren't.

Patrick Kaser at Brandywine Global Investment Management screens for free cash flow/enterprise value yield — and finds plenty of big S&P 500 names trading at attractive levels.

Sure, some are cheap for a reason, but others (especially in healthcare, energy, and industrials) look surprisingly solid for the long haul.

Jon Hartsel of Donald Smith & Co points out that agricultural stocks are under pressure, while Kaser notes that even software giants like Salesforce and Adobe now offer 6–7% free CF yields.

What LinkedIn Can Do for You — Part 2: Getting invited as a fox 🦊 into a hen 🐓 house! 

I recently shared a story about one of the unexpected perks of my growing “LinkedIn fame”.

When a silent follower spotted me walking down a London street (while dining at a fish & chips place!) and immediately messaged me:

“I just saw you walk by…and you walk fast! 🏃‍♂️”

That post resonated far beyond what I anticipated, so I decided to turn it into a series:

So here comes Part 2:

A few weeks ago, I received an unexpected invitation from Oskar Volkland, a #linkedinbuddy of mine ever since he generously gave me a personal tour of his city before I attended the Citywire Hamburg conference earlier this year.

What made his invitation remarkable was the context:
Oskar works for Astorius, a private equity fund-of-funds manager.

Now, for those who know my work here on LinkedIn, you’ll understand why that raised an eyebrow (or two). 

I've built something of a reputation as one of the more outspoken critics of private equity on this platform.

So when I got invited to speak at a lunch hosted by Astorius, I couldn’t resist opening my talk with:

“I feel a bit like a fox 🦊 in the hen house 🐓 today!”

In all seriousness, I was genuinely impressed by the invitation itself.

It spoke volumes about the confidence and openness of the Astorius team…willing to engage with a critical voice instead of avoiding it.

What followed was an open and curious discussion. 

I shared my personal journey 🧳 in finance, both as a professional and as an investor.

And in turn, I got the chance to learn more about Astorius’s investment philosophy and how they’re navigating the numerous challenges currently facing the private equity industry.

And it seems that Astorius is steering through the turbulence better than many others.

Which kind of explains why they “dared” to have me attend their client event. 

Oskar and I have promised to keep in touch and I’m sure he’ll keep me posted on how things evolve.

The Challenge of Diversification: It’s become a moving target. 🏃🎯 

Loved the latest research piece coming out of Verdad Advisers. On a topic close to my heart.

(As asset allocation drives 80-90% of investors’ returns, it should be a topic of universal appeal!)

For decades, equities have been the unrivaled engine of long-term wealth creation, returning about 11% annually over the past 50 years. 

But as every finance student learns early on, diversification is supposed to be “the only free lunch in investing.”

In theory, finding an asset that earns a modest positive return and moves differently from equities should improve portfolio outcomes. 

In practice, it’s been far trickier.

Verdad recently tested a range of “diversifiers” — international equities, REITs, gold, fixed income, commodities, and long/short equity factors — against an all-equity benchmark over five decades. 

The results were revealing:

✅ In 42 of 50 years, at least one diversified portfolio outperformed an all-equity portfolio.

✅ In 7 out of 10 rolling five-year periods, diversification helped.

❌ Yet over the full 50 years, no diversified mix beat 100% equities.

Why? Because the winning diversifier kept changing.

Before 2000, certain diversifiers (like gold or international equities) held leadership for years. 

Since then, leadership turnover has accelerated.

No single diversifier has stayed on top for more than two consecutive years. 

Correlations, once stable, now swing with macro regimes, inflation cycles, and policy shifts.

The takeaway: 

Diversification works in theory but resists static implementation. 

The true challenge is dynamic diversification — adapting exposures as correlations and return drivers evolve.

The realisation that finally got me posting on LinkedIn

It happened when I stopped worrying about what other people might think.

Looking back, that took me a while.

When you’re younger, it’s kind of normal to care a lot about how you come across.

You’re figuring things out, probably a bit insecure. I definitely was.

Fast-forward a few decades…
Nowadays, I try to live by what Warren Buffett calls an inner scorecard.

Basically: Do what feels right to you, not what looks good to others.

He summed it up perfectly:

“Would you rather be the world’s greatest lover, but have everyone think you’re the worst?
Or be the world’s worst lover, but have everyone think you’re the greatest?”

That one really stuck with me.

It’s a great reminder to live (and post) for your own truth, not for other people’s opinions.

But seriously… don’t ask my wife about this one, ok? 😁

💥 London’s $400 Million Crime Wave: The Global Business of Stolen Phones

Every time I’m in London, this topic comes up. And lately, more and more people I meet have experienced it firsthand.

Needless to say, I gobbled up this breaking story in the New York Times:

Last year alone, 80,000 phones vanished from the hands of Londoners. A number so large it has reshaped the city’s crime landscape. 

What once looked like petty theft now turns out to be a global supply chain of stolen smartphones, stretching from London’s streets to warehouses near Heathrow ✈️ and onward to markets in China 🇨🇳.

Here’s what’s jaw-dropping: police recently uncovered shipments of "batteries" bound for Hong Kong 🇭🇰 that actually contained nearly 1,000 stolen iPhones. 

Another raid found phones wrapped in miles of aluminum foil to block tracking signals. 

The scale? Up to 40,000 phones exported to China, each potentially resold for as much as $5,000.

So how did London — one of the world’s safest, smartest cities — become a hotspot for tech theft?

▶️ Technology and opportunity collided.
The rise of e-bikes gave thieves the perfect escape tool. In seconds, a phone is snatched, gone, and untraceable.

▶️ Policy created vulnerability.
After a decade of austerity, police budgets were slashed. "Low-level" crimes like phone theft went largely uninvestigated…until small-time hustlers realized they could act with impunity.

▶️ Global systems failed to sync.
In China, many network providers don’t subscribe to the international blacklist for stolen phones. A "blocked" U.K. iPhone becomes fully functional again overseas — and therefore, extremely valuable.

The result? A multi-tiered criminal network that mirrors a modern business model: street-level "collectors," mid-tier "wholesalers," and high-level "exporters." 

Only 495 suspects were charged out of 106,000 thefts in a single year.

As one criminologist put it:

"You wouldn’t count £1,000 on the street. But when your phone is worth that much, that’s exactly what you’re doing."

London’s story is more than a crime wave. It’s a case study in digital-era risk. From cybersecurity to urban planning, the lesson is clear: protecting data isn’t enough. We have to protect the devices that hold it.

I keep telling myself not to work on my iPhone while walking 🚶‍♂️ through London. Easier said than done.

I think I just broke ChatGPT 🐉🦄🐴 

All I asked was:

"Is there a seahorse emoji?"

(When my oldest son came home from school today, he asked me to enter this into ChatGPT right away.)

What followed was…chaos.

A full-blown identity crisis involving 🐴, 🦄, 🐉 — and about 100 "final answers."

Proof that even AI can short-circuit over tiny questions. 😅 

Here's the twist: there is no seahorse emoji.

But ChatGPT (and apparently other LLMs) are sure there is, confidently inventing one if you ask.

Why? Because LLMs don’t "know."

They don’t retrieve facts, they predict patterns.

They generate what ought to exist, not what does.

And in a world of 🦄, 🐢, and 🦑, of course a seahorse should exist.

So the model simply makes one up.

Funny? Yes.

But also a perfect reminder that AI doesn't confuse facts.

We do, when it sounds confident enough.

Private credit 101: A “drop-down transaction” 🔎

Private credit comes with a number of challenges.

A fact many investors are starting to wake up to.

And it comes with its own lingo.

Gobbledygook.

(I used to swim in alphabet soup as a CDO investor: CLO, CBO, CSO, CRE CDO, CDO of ABS, CDO Squared… 😵‍💫)

One term that you better know in advance before entering private credit is: “a drop-down transaction”.

As it turns out, something rather unpleasant and often expensive from the lender’s/investor’s perspective.

And here is what a drop-down transaction in private credit means:

The borrower moves valuable assets into a new, non-collateral entity to raise new debt or shield assets from existing lenders. 

Often seen as an aggressive borrower-friendly maneuver that can weaken existing lenders’ positions unless their loan documents tightly restrict it.

An infamous example from J.Crew in 2017: The company dropped its IP into an unrestricted subsidiary to secure new financing. Hence the term “J.Crew trapdoor.” 🪤🚪

ℹ️ Last week was an eventful one in the credit space.

Jamie Dimon flagged a potential crack in the credit cycle after J.P. Morgan took a roughly $170 million hit tied to subprime auto lender Tricolor, warning “when you see one cockroach, there are probably more.”  

Blue Owl Capital co-CEO Marc Lipschultz fired back, saying the problematic deals were “bank-led” and suggesting banks should inspect their own books before blaming private credit.  

Shortly after, regional lenders disclosed fresh troubles: Zions Bancorporation announced about a $50 million charge related to alleged misrepresentations on two loans, and Western Alliance Bank filed a fraud suit tied to commercial-real-estate loans.
