🔥 What we know about energy use at U.S. data centers amid the AI boom 🔥
 📌 Based on new analysis by Pew Research Center

The rapid expansion of AI-optimized data centers is reshaping not only digital infrastructure, but also U.S. energy demand, grid planning, and sustainability commitments.

A few highlights from the research:
✅ U.S. data centers consumed ~183 TWh of electricity in 2024, representing over 4% of national electricity use, projected to rise to ~426 TWh by 2030.

✅ Around 60% of all electricity goes directly into compute workloads (including AI GPUs), with cooling systems accounting for a large secondary share.

✅ Water usage is material: data centers used ~17 billion gallons in 2023, and hyperscale facilities alone could reach 16–33 billion gallons annually by 2028.

✅ Power-source mix is still dominated by fossil fuels (natural gas ~40%+), while renewables and nuclear fill the remainder.

✅ In regions with concentrated builds, such as Virginia, data centers already consume more than a quarter of statewide electricity, driving grid-upgrade costs and potential bill increases.

A broader strategic lens
As we scale AI across industries, leaders in telecom, edge, IoT and digital infrastructure must think beyond performance gains. 

This moment isn’t just about expanding compute power, it’s equally about resource intensity, grid capacity, energy-transition pathways, and long-term sustainability models.

This creates critical leadership questions:
☑️ Where should AI workloads be placed — hyperscale, regional, or edge?

☑️ How do grid readiness, water access, and energy mix influence infrastructure decisions?

☑️ Can AI growth accelerate renewable investment, circular cooling systems, and energy-efficient architectures?

Why this matters now
AI is scaling faster than legacy utilities and permitting systems were designed to handle. 

The next wave of innovation requires alignment between AI architects, telecom planners, utilities, policymakers, and climate strategists.

The real competitive edge may soon shift from highest performance → to lowest footprint per inference.

The Opening Keynote set an urgent tone. CEO Olivier Blum and the leadership team outlined how electrification, automation, and AI are converging to modernize our energy and industrial systems, backed by several major announcements:

 ✅ AI-powered EcoStruxure, a next-generation platform unifying power, energy, buildings, and industrial systems with up to 50% efficiency gains.
 ✅ 1,000+ TWh of new U.S. electricity capacity needed this decade, a call for public–private collaboration as AI workloads surge.
 ✅ A unified energy + digital + AI strategy connecting buildings, data centers, and industry as one ecosystem.

These announcements weren't abstract, they were grounded in real engineering, real deployments, and real customers. It was really clear that as an energy technology partner, Schneider Electric has a solid strategy addressing the urgency of capacity, speed, and resilience as AI workloads skyrocket and energy demand accelerates.

My afternoon concluded with a guided tour of the Switch Data Center campus, where Schneider Electric’s technology is deeply integrated. The scale is remarkable, like stepping into a purpose-built industrial city designed for AI.

✅ Fortified, redundant electrical pathways
✅ Real-time digital monitoring across the facility

Our electric infrastructure wasn’t designed for the combined load of AI, hyperscale data centers, widespread EV adoption, and modern household demand.
The path to an AI-powered, electrified, and resilient future will be built by organizations willing to innovate boldly and collaborate widely.
