I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my campaign, "Women at Work/In Leadership," which will culminate in a significant talk at Norfolk Cathedral this month. This campaign is dedicated to empowering women in the workplace, celebrating their contributions, and advocating for greater representation in leadership roles. As we gear up for this exciting event, I want to share with you six powerful ways that women can champion each other at work. Together, we can create environments where women thrive and lead with confidence.

6 Ways That Women Can Champion Each Other at Work:
⭐️Amplify Each Other's Voices: In meetings or discussions, make a point to echo and credit the ideas of your female colleagues. This helps ensure that their contributions are acknowledged and prevents them from being overlooked.
⭐️Provide Constructive Feedback: Honest and constructive feedback is invaluable. Offer your insights to help your peers grow, and be open to receiving feedback in return. This mutual exchange fosters continuous improvement and strengthens relationships.
⭐️Mentor and Sponsor: Take on the role of a mentor or sponsor for other women. Share your experiences, offer guidance, and advocate for them in situations where they may not be present, such as high-level meetings or promotion discussions.
⭐️Celebrate Successes: Recognise and celebrate the achievements of other women in your workplace. Whether it’s a promotion, successful project, or overcoming a challenge, acknowledging these milestones boosts morale and encourages continued excellence.

I’m thrilled to invite you to the 21st Norfolk Cambridge Society Public Lecture, where I’ll be discussing "Leading Major Companies - A Woman's Perspective." This lecture is part of the "NCS Female Leadership Year," and I'm honoured to be the first speaker in this powerful series.

During the lecture, I will share my journey as the former Chairman & CEO of IBM Asia Pacific and my experiences leading PREMIER FARNELL UK LIMITED and Thomas Cook Group plc. Finding Joy in Everything We Do: What Sally Would Have Wanted

A few months ago I lost a dear friend, Sally, to cancer after a decade-long battle. Even in the face of such a challenging journey, Sally was brilliant at finding joy. She lived by it, embraced it, and shared it freely. That’s what she would have wanted us to remember: the importance of finding joy in everything we do, no matter the circumstance.

This poem by Mary Oliver, Don’t Hesitate, has always been a go-to for me, but now it holds even more significance. It reminds us that despite the pain, despite everything that seems irredeemable, life still holds beauty. Sally lived that truth.

“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give in to it... Joy is not made to be a crumb.”

Let us all take this to heart today and find joy in the smallest of moments—because that's exactly what Sally would have wanted.

As part of my ongoing Women in Leadership campaign, I want to talk about the pressing need to revive and elevate women’s leadership in an increasingly AI-driven workplace. The rapid advancement of AI presents both incredible opportunities and real risks, particularly when it comes to perpetuating gender biases if we’re not careful.

We all know that the tech industry has been male-dominated for far too long, and that’s reflected in the AI systems being built today. If we don’t have diverse voices and perspectives at the leadership level, we risk allowing AI to reinforce outdated stereotypes and make existing inequalities worse. That’s why we must act now – women need to be involved not just in shaping these technologies but leading the charge.

This is my call to action for women: Our time is now. AI isn’t just a technological leap; it’s a massive shift in how we work, live, and lead. The power of AI combined with the skills so many women naturally bring – communication, collaboration, and empathy – makes this the perfect moment for us to step up and take the lead.

However, we can’t sit back and wait for change. We need to seize this moment, ensuring that women are not just participants but leaders in the AI-driven future. AI has the potential to transform industries, and I firmly believe women’s strengths can shape the way forward. For example, AI might be brilliant at processing data, but it’s the human touch – the empathy and communication – that will always be vital. And that’s where we shine.

This is our opportunity to push for inclusive leadership and to make sure the digital future is built on diversity, not just as a box-ticking exercise but as a core value. The time to act is now, before the biases of the past become the algorithms of the future. Let’s work together to build a more equitable and inclusive landscape in AI and beyond.

⭐️Keep It Simple: Avoid overcrowding your slides with too much text or too many visuals. Focus on the key messages you want to convey and use concise language. The simpler your slides, the easier it is for your audience to follow along and retain the information.
⭐️Use Visuals Wisely: Visual aids can enhance your message, but only if used effectively. Use high-quality images, graphs, and charts that support your points and help to explain complex information more clearly. Remember, visuals should complement your narrative, not overshadow it.
⭐️Engage Your Audience: Ask questions, use anecdotes, or include interactive elements to keep your audience engaged. The more you can involve them, the more memorable your presentation will be.
⭐️Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse your presentation multiple times to get comfortable with the content and the flow. This will help you deliver your message more confidently and allow you to focus on engaging with your audience rather than worrying about what comes next.
⭐️Connecting When Presenting Online: In the virtual world, connection is just as important as in-person. Become familiar with the technology so that both you and your presentation appear on screen. This ensures that your audience can see your expressions and gestures, which are crucial for conveying enthusiasm and engagement. Practice switching between your presentation and direct engagement with the camera, so you can maintain a strong connection with your audience throughout.

Rituals play an essential role in leadership, providing structure, consistency, and a sense of shared purpose. But beyond their practical benefits, rituals are deeply intertwined with workplace culture—they embody and reinforce the values, behaviours, and norms that define how a team functions and thrives.

For me, these rituals are foundational to how I lead and how I cultivate the culture within my teams. Here are some of the rituals that anchor our workplace culture:

- 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆: Anyone—whether an employee, customer, partner, or shareholder—can book time with me. This isn't just about accessibility; it's about fostering a culture of transparency, trust, and openness, where everyone feels heard and valued.

- 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: Every Monday, in every time zone, at 8 am. This ritual ensures that we start the week with alignment, clarity, and a shared focus. It sets the tone for collaboration and reinforces the importance of being synchronised across regions.

- 𝟭:𝟭𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀: Monthly, alternating between phone and face-to-face. These meetings are more than just check-ins; they are opportunities to build personal connections, provide support, and ensure that every team member feels seen and appreciated.

- 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: Live-streamed to reach every corner of the business. This ritual is about inclusivity and real-time communication, making sure that everyone, no matter where they are, feels part of the larger mission and connected to the company's goals.

- 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: These gatherings with wider teams go beyond work—they are about building camaraderie, reinforcing a sense of belonging, and nurturing the informal relationships that make a strong culture thrive.

- 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: A personal ritual with my husband, Graham, to ensure that amidst the demands of leadership, I remain grounded and maintain balance. Self-care and relationships outside of work are critical to sustained leadership effectiveness.

These rituals create a rhythm that not only drives performance but also strengthens the cultural fabric of our organization. As Harvard Business Review notes, daily rituals can reduce stress, increase productivity, and foster a sense of belonging. When done well, they turn routine tasks into meaningful traditions that make everyone feel more connected and motivated.

Workplace culture is what you see when you look in the corporate mirror—it's a reflection of these rituals and the values they represent.

As we navigate the future of work amidst rapid technological advancements and evolving work environments, I see both immense challenges and exciting opportunities for women.

Flexibility is Essential: The rise of remote working and flexible schedules has empowered women to balance their professional and personal lives more effectively. However, it's not enough for these policies to simply exist. 

Organisations need to actively support them and create environments where women can achieve long-term success across all industries.
We need the right skills: In a world that’s changing faster than ever, women must equip themselves with the skills the future demands. From my own experience, mastering numeracy, business acumen, and technology—alongside empathy and collaboration—are vital. These critical skills will ensure women stay at the forefront in an increasingly tech-driven landscape.

Tech Proficiency is Crucial: With AI and emerging technologies reshaping every industry, having strong tech skills is no longer optional. Women must be ready to lead in this space. Lifelong learning and continual upskilling are essential, and organisations that champion gender balance in tech education and leadership will be the ones to create a more inclusive and prosperous future.

Inclusive Cultures Foster Success: Building a workplace where women feel safe, valued, and heard is both a moral and business imperative. Companies that celebrate diversity in thought and experience will be better positioned to innovate and succeed. We need to move beyond token gestures and towards genuine inclusion, ensuring every woman has the opportunity to thrive at the highest levels.

The Future is Bright, But Action is Key: While the future of work holds incredible promise, it’s on all of us to ensure it’s an inclusive one. In a world often filled with stories of environmental challenges, it’s refreshing to hear about solutions making a real impact. Two uplifting stories from 2024—ocean protection and solar balconies—remind us that progress is possible and happening now.

 Ocean Protection: Oceans cover more than 70% of our planet, and protecting them is vital for maintaining biodiversity and climate balance. In 2024, countries around the globe have made significant strides in ocean conservation efforts. From establishing new marine protected areas to international collaborations designed to limit overfishing and reduce plastic pollution, these actions are a major win for our oceans. The health of marine life is slowly recovering, showing that when we commit to change, nature responds positively.

Solar Balconies: On the urban front, innovation is happening at home—literally. Solar balconies, designed to capture energy from the sun right where we live, are becoming an increasingly popular way to reduce carbon footprints. These solar panels can be easily installed on apartment balconies, allowing city dwellers to generate clean energy without needing a large solar farm. It’s a simple, scalable idea that brings renewable energy closer to the everyday person, transforming unused spaces into eco-friendly power sources.

Both of these stories show that positive environmental change doesn’t always have to be grand or global to be impactful. Sometimes it’s about rethinking our homes, our shores, and taking small, thoughtful steps toward a greener future.

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries, including beauty, but one of its most troubling aspects is bias—especially in how AI defines beauty standards. Most of the world’s AI coders are male, often Californian, and white, leading to narrow, exclusionary definitions of beauty that reflect their own perspectives. Dove’s latest ‘Real Beauty’ campaign addresses this issue head-on, showing how AI can unintentionally perpetuate harmful stereotypes about attractiveness.

While AI holds great potential—revolutionising industries, streamlining processes, and democratising access—it also has serious drawbacks that need addressing. The lack of diversity among AI developers and the absence of a universal ethical code mean these systems often reinforce the status quo rather than challenge it. This is particularly troubling when it comes to defining beauty standards, where AI has the power to either cement harmful stereotypes or break them down.

Dove’s campaign highlights the fact that AI is only as good as the data it's trained on—and that data often lacks diversity. If coders are largely homogenous, then outcomes will be too. This has led to AI-driven beauty standards that often reinforce specific ideals of skin tone, facial features, and body types, leaving many feeling excluded or misrepresented. Dove urges the beauty industry to be mindful of how AI shapes perceptions of beauty.

As Dove points out, AI is hard to change once biased systems are in place. Because AI learns from data it's fed, reversing ingrained biases isn’t simple. Even as brands strive for inclusivity, algorithms may still amplify harmful stereotypes if datasets remain skewed.

But here's why I believe AI also represents a significant opportunity—especially for women. As non-human intelligence scales rapidly, women’s skills are becoming increasingly valuable. Traits like collaboration, communication, impulse control, and creativity—all rooted in the frontal lobe—are more pronounced in women and align well with AI’s evolving needs.

For example, AI’s ability to diagnose disease is incredibly powerful, often surpassing the capabilities of practising doctors. However, communicating that diagnosis and developing a treatment plan require the empathetic and nuanced skills women often excel in. These skills are vital for translating complex AI insights into meaningful, human-centric solutions. This is our time to work with AI, leveraging the powerful life skills and intelligence that women bring.

I am beyond excited to be delivering my upcoming speech at the stunning Norwich Cathedral, an iconic venue steeped in history. On 12th September, I’ll be kicking off the 21st Norfolk Cambridge Society Public Lecture, and I can’t wait to share insights on “Leading Major Companies – A Woman’s Perspective.”

This is an important conversation about leadership, the future of business, and the pivotal role women play in shaping that future—especially as we face the rise of AI and rapid workplace transformations.
