From law school → $10M startup → full time Dad & $1M freedom business that gave me my life back

After law school, I joined a startup in sports marketing as employee #3.

Then COVID hit. Revenue disappeared overnight.
I had to lay off my entire team.

The same week, my first son was born.

That fateful week in 2020 shattered my illusion of security.

I knew I had to build something of my own, something my family could count on.

So I started posting online.
Not to monetize at first.. just to document what I wanted my son to know one day.
To my shock, my audience grew fast. Hundreds of thousands of followers on X and IG.

But I had no clue how to turn attention into income.

I worked nights, weekends, holidays.
16 months straight. 2 kids under 2 at the time.
I launched project after project, none of it stuck.

Then, almost by accident, I started offering fitness coaching (yes from an anonymous X account ... don't let the haters say it can't be done lol)

Suddenly, the leads came in fast.

And everything clicked.

Before, I'd had the wrong offers.
The wrong pricing.
The wrong focus.

Within 30 days, I had my first $20K month.
Five months later, I hit my goals and quit my job.

-Talk to businesses

-Ask about their problems

-Write down the ones you can solve

-Offer to solve them for a fee

That’s it. No gimmicks. No overthinking.

The best part: you already have the skill. You already have the advantage. You’ve spent a decade+ refining it.

Well two bad words actually...

"Laid off"

I talk to people every day who worry this is the ultimate outcome they're facing at their current company

There's so much uncertainty, so many unknowns...

And we see stories every day of companies letting go of talented, loyal, hardworking people

This is why I no longer believe that having a traditional career is the 'safe' route

Having all your eggs in one basket, with one employer, (one client), is starting to seem riskier by the day

Real security comes from diversifying. From building additional streams of income so it doesn't matter what your employer does

Finally got to hang out with Sahil Bloom in person this weekend

He gave an incredible talk at the Into The Arena conference in Las Vegas on Friday. I spoke on Saturday.

One thing is clear after this weekend:

The world is waking up. There's been a huge shift in how people value their time and their work and how it fits into the vision they have for their life

Sahil wrote about it so well in his book The Five Types of Wealth (a must read if you're one of the few who haven't yet)

And after speaking to the conference attendees this weekend, I see this change in real time: more people questioning the 60-hour grind, more people choosing freedom and flexibility, more people asking “How can I build wealth across all areas of my life, not just financially?”

For me it was through entrepreneurship. It was through committing to a season of building my business on the side of my career, and finally breaking free in 2022.

That was the first domino that gave me the freedom to build what really matters: financial, social, time, physical, and mental wealth in balance.

What about you? How are you building wealth? Not just financially, but in all areas of your life?

You can spend 13 years climbing the corporate ladder to make $200k/year...

Or you can land 2 fractional clients at $10k/mo and get there in 6 months

The strangest part is that people think the first option is the 'safe' route

Even though it comes with 

- endless meetings
- outrageous commutes
- demeaning 'performance reviews'
- and if you're lucky, a 3% raise at the end of the year

But the reality is, the safe route is the second option

- no interviews
- no ATS rejections
- no 60 hour workweeks
- just companies paying you for the skills you already use at your job

If you left your job today, could you land another one in a few weeks?

If the answer is yes, then you already have all the proof you need.

Your skills are valuable. Other companies will pay for them. 

The only difference is this time, YOU get to pick the clients

You get to set the terms

and you get to keep the upside

The biggest mistake new consultants / fractional operators make:

Building an offer.

Yes, that's right. 

I've seen people waste months 'crafting' their perfect offer

I hear it almost every day in the DMs...

"I just need to get my offer right, then I can go to market with it"

This is the standard guru advice, because it creates fake dopamine and makes you feel like you're making progress

But the reality is:

This is BACKWARDS

Building an 'offer' when you've never sold anything is exactly how you wind up wasting months building something nobody wants

Why it fails:

- You can’t outsmart the market.
- Polished offers built in isolation almost always flop.
- Wastes months and kills momentum.

What to do instead:

- Build a list of 40 people you think you could help (as long as you can help their business make new revenue, make new profit, or reduce expensive risk, put them on the list)

- Ask them about the biggest headaches in their business

- Propose paid pilots with the businesses who have a problem you can help solve

- Now you're getting paid to do market research, SMART!

- Look for the overlap of engagements where 3 things are true:

1) You enjoy the work (don't have to love it, but can't hate it either)

2) You got a solid result for the client

3) The client didn't require a ton of convincing or a long sales cycle to try you out

Then ... package THAT into your core offer

This is the fastest way to get your first paid engagements as a consultant / fractional operator

The problem is nobody wants to do it this way because it sounds like 'work'

I hate to break it to you...but there is no future that exists where you have the side income you want, and you don't do hard work. These are mutually exclusive outcomes

🚫 Random gimmicky side hustles (FBA ... dropshipping ... the list goes on)

🚫 Becoming a 'content creator' and ... profiting ... somehow?

Instead, all you need to do is:

✅  Monetize your career.

In other words, sell your knowledge and your skills b2b as a consultant or fractional leader.

This is the single best path to building significant 'side income'. 

Whether you just want more financial flexibility, or you want to become your own boss...

This is the highest-probability bet you can make.

Just doing what you do now... for more people.

Your company pays you for a reason, which means other companies will too.
