UNICEF in collaboration with Yuwaah and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India is hosting the #ImPact With Youth Conclave in Chennai on 12 August 2023 in Chennai. The conclave is being organized to celebrate the international youth day.   This conclave is poised to champion the co-creation of change and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals with youth, with a central focus on this year's International Youth Day theme – Green Skills. 
 
On the occasion, Ms Cynthia McCaffrey, Representative, UNICEF India delivered the introductory remarks while Mr Sanjay Wijesekera, Regional Director, UNICEF South Asia Region and Mr Shombi Sharp, United Nations Resident Coordinator, India joined online and Mr  Anurag Thakur, Hon'ble Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs, and Minister of Information and Broadcasting was the chief guest at the event.
 
Five young delegates will also be participating from the south Asia region. Ms Hasini Lakshminarayanan, a 14-year-old delegate from Chennai was present at the event venue.

I am Hasini, a 16-year-old social Enterprenuer #youtuber, Young Nutrition Ambassador for the Government of Tamilnadu, and the Youngest Journalist . I am also a freelance writer for The Hindu In School, a public speaker, and the founder of Guiding Young Minds Monthly Magazine.

My passion for empowering children led me to start The First Step, a platform where I interview young achievers and showcase their journeys. My mission is to inspire children to believe in themselves and their abilities, and I truly believe that all children are born with the qualities of being geniuses.

Through my work, I aim to encourage children to take the first step toward their dreams, and I am excited to continue making a positive impact on the next generation.

A few weeks ago, I watched someone my age speak on stage.

They were a good speaker. Confident. Loud. Well-rehearsed.

But the room was dead.

No heads nodding. No phones going down. No silence that means people are listening.

That’s when it hit me: we’re confusing talking with communicating.

Talking is easy. Anyone can fill 10 minutes with words.

Communicating is harder. It requires reading the room, adjusting on the spot, and sometimes throwing your script away.

I’ve spoken on big stages, small rooms, corporate halls, school auditoriums and the one lesson that keeps repeating itself is this:

If you’re not present, your audience won’t be either.

People don’t remember perfect lines.
They remember how aware you were of them.
This applies beyond stages.

In meetings. In classrooms. In conversations we think we “finished” but never actually connected in.

The day we stop trying to sound impressive and start trying to be understood -everything changes.

And no, this isn’t a motivational quote.
It’s a skill. One most people avoid practicing.

Here’s an uncomfortable truth: 

I never really hated Tamil. I hated the way it was taught to me.

Growing up, Tamil felt heavy. Too rigid, too exam-focused, and too obsessed with memorisation. I struggled to keep up, didn’t fully understand it, and slowly convinced myself that Tamil just wasn’t for me. 

By the time I finished my 10th boards, I was genuinely relieved. No more chasing grammar rules or writing long answers I barely connected with. I thought that chapter of my life was closed.

Then I entered the IBDP and chose Self-Taught Tamil - almost accidentally. I didn’t expect much. But surprisingly, it’s now one of my favourite classes.

Not because the language suddenly became easy. It didn’t. Trust me if anything it became 20X harder 

BUTT….

But the approach changed everything. I wasn’t forced to mug up answers. I was encouraged to read, interpret, question, and actually think. 

Tamil stopped being a subject and became a way to understand stories, emotions, identity, and history.

That shift changed my mindset completely.

It made me realise how often we label ourselves as “bad” at something, when the real issue is how it was introduced to us. 

Bad teaching kills curiosity far quicker than difficulty ever can.

Tamil came back into my life unexpectedly. This time, I didn’t run from it , I finally learned to appreciate it!

New year. Same me. Different rules.

Last year taught me something uncomfortable: 
motivation is useless if consistency keeps ghosting you. So this year’s resolution isn’t some aesthetic “level up” list. It’s practical. Almost boring. And necessary.


First , building resilience to show up even when I don’t feel like it. Especially on days when the excitement fades and discipline is the only thing left in the room. I’m done romanticising bursts of productivity. I want boring consistency.

Second , actually adapting to student life away from home. Not pretending I’ve “figured it out” just because I can function. Chennai gave me warmth—people, weather, familiarity. Mulshi gives me silence, distance, and time with myself. I’m learning to sit with that instead of running from it.

Third,yes, the cold. Growing up in Chennai did not prepare me for this. But instead of complaining, I’m learning to adjust—layers, routines, mindset. Resistance doesn’t make winters shorter.

And obviously, I hope to travel more :)

This year isn’t about drastic change for me.

It’s about staying, adapting, and not quitting halfway. Quiet growth. One day at a time!

What are your resolutions this year ?

I was scrolling through the news the yesterday when Venezuela came up again. 

Different headlines, same tension. Talks, sanctions, negotiations, oil everything tangled together in a way that feels far removed from everyday life, yet somehow affects millions.

From a student’s perspective, what stands out isn’t who’s right or wrong, but how complicated global politics really is. 

Countries don’t act in isolation. Every decision is layered with history, economics, and long-term consequences. 

The Venezuela–US situation is a reminder that international relations aren’t black and white they’re a mix of interests, diplomacy, and difficult trade-offs.

What worries me most is how easily real people get reduced to numbers in these conversations. 

Inflation, migration, access to food and healthcare these aren’t “side effects,” they’re lived realities for students, families, and workers.

This isn’t about blaming one country. It’s about understanding that stability doesn’t come from pressure alone, and progress doesn’t come from silence either. 

It comes from dialogue, cooperation, and solutions that last beyond headlines.

As young people, maybe our role is to look past the noise and ask better questions not just about politics, but about people.

I’ve been glued to world news lately, and honestly? 

It feels like we’re bumping up against history in real time not some sci-fi prediction but real moves by real countries.

Europe isn’t just talking about defense anymore - nations like Sweden, Finland, Norway and others are handing out pamphlets telling citizens how to survive a crisis or war , how to stock food, find shelter, use civil defense alerts the whole old-school Cold War playbook revived for 2025. 


Across NATO, governments are debating bringing back military service and total-defense readiness, not because they want war but because intelligence assessments warn that large-scale conflict isn’t impossible in this decade.

At the same time, the U.S. push on Greenland including talk of military options has rattled European capitals and raised questions about alliances we assumed were untouchable. 

As a young person thinking about the future and my assets, I’m paying attention and not panicking but realigning how I think about risk, politics, and global stability!
